‘ Wildwood’ is about the element of wood, as it exists in nature, in our souls, in our culture & our lives.” So said Roger Deakin of this, his last book, that was published posthumously; a marvellous piece of natural history & cultural writing, it is an unmatched exploration of our relationship with trees. From the walnut tree at his Suffolk home, Roger Deakin embarks upon a quest that takes him through Britain, across Europe, to Central Asia & Australia, in search of what lies behind man’s profound & enduring connection with wood & with trees. Meeting woodlanders of all kinds, he lives in shacks & cabins, travels in search of the wild apple groves of Kazakhstan, goes coppicing in Suffolk, swims beneath the walnut trees of the Haut-Languedoc, & hunts bushplums with Aboriginal women in the outback. Part autobiography, history, traveller’s tale & also an incisive work of natural history, it will take you into the heart of the woods, where we go ‘to grow, learn, & change’. ...

' One of the very few people who in our time could be put on the pedestal of the great explorers of the eighteenth & nineteenth centuries' David Attenborough An exquisite pictorial record, charting the career & outstanding achievements of one of the country's most distinguished travel writers & photographers, & the twentieth century's greatest explorer. Sir Wilfred Thesiger was born in 1910 at the original British Legation -- a collection of wattle-&-daub tukuls -- in Addis Ababa, & spent his early years in Abyssinia. He was educated at Eton & Oxford & at the age of twenty attended the coronation of HIM Haile Selassie at the emperor's personal invitation. Three years later he made his first expedition into the country of the murderous Danakil tribe. He joined the Sudan political service in 1935 & served in the War in Abyssinia & the Middle East with Special Operations Executive & the Special Air Service under David Stirling. After that, he traversed the Empty Quarter twice whilst living among the Bedu, & spent several years with the Marshmen of Iraq. He made many mountain journeys in the awesome ranges of the Karakorams, the Hindu Kush, Ladakh & Chitral. Following these varied & often dangerous adventures among fast-disappearing cultures, Thesiger settled down to spend over twenty years living among the pastoral Samburu in Kenya, until returning to England in 1994. He died in Surrey in August 2003. Over the years Thesiger's experiences provided rich material for several books, all received with great acclaim. His always loved to record his exploits on film, & his nationally recognized collection of photographs now resides at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford. This beautifully produced, coffee-table book contains 250 of his most stunning images, which capture the spirit of a bygone era. These are accompanied by Thesiger's own recollections, his vivid prose expressing a romantic but austere vision. ...

Wilfred Owen

No poetry has touched readers` hearts more deeply than the soldier poets of the First World War. Published to commemorate the centenary of 1914, this stunning set of books, with specially commissioned covers by leading print makers, is an essential gathering of our most beloved war poets introduced by leading poets and biographers of our present day. Dying at twenty-five, a week before the end of the First World War, Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) has come to represent a generation of young men sacrificed - as it seems to the next generation, one in unprecedented rebellion against its fathers - by guilty old men: generals, politicians, profiteers. Owen has now taken his place in literary history as perhaps the first, certainly the quintessential, war poet.
