Werden, Kettwig & Villa Hügel in 1944 in the Alan Godfrey series of reproductions of British War Office survey maps first published in 1945 prior to the Allied occupation of the area. The map covers an area from Kettwig eastward to Kupferdreh, with the town of Werden in the centre. The River Ruhr runs across it, including the Baldeney See. Much of the area is now part of Essen, & some of the southern suburbs of that city are at the top of the map. A major feature is the great Villa Hügel, the home of the Krupp family, from which Alfried Krupp was taken by American soldiers in April 1945. Other areas shown on the map include Bredeney, Baldeney, Heidhausen, Fischlaken. There is relatively little of the industry that is omnipresent elsewhere in the Ruhr, but the map does include some railways & collieries, Mülheim Airfield, & Kettwig, one of the most attractive town centres in the region. The maps are taken from the British War Office 1:12, 500 plans & reduced at Approx. 1:19, 000. Published in 1945, prior to the Allied occupation of the area, the maps are especially good at showing industry, collieries & transport. They are not bombing maps
- indeed, they make clear that allowance is not made for bomb damage
- but show the areas with all their industrial sites & railways largely as they were before the bombing raids of 1943-44. The maps have additional information added by British intelligence. This is normally accurate but allowance must be made for the `fog of war` & occasional spelling mistakes, etc. Each title has on the reverse a specially written introduction to the area in English, with a shorter text in German. A facsimile edition of Abraham Gottlob Werner`s classic taxonomy of nature`s colours, as used by Charles Darwin. First published in 1814, ` Werner`s Nomenclature of Colours` is a taxonomic guide to colour which been cherished by naturalists & anthropologists for over two centuries. In the late 1790`s Abraham Gottlob Werner devised his own standardised colour scheme, which allowed the writer to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who traced the actual minerals described by Werner, & used them to create the colour charts found in the book. In the pre-photographic age, almost all visual details had to be captured using the written word, & scientific observers could not afford any ambiguity in their descriptions.
