Highly Commended, BMA Medical Book Awards 2013 The history of health care is complex, confusing, & contested. It involves more than just the creation of hospitals & dispensaries, infirmaries, & health centers. There are also royal colleges, trades unions, medical schools, nurses` homes, coroners` courts, nursing sisterhoods, ambulance stations, patients` organizations, & medical missions. Usually, to enhance our understanding we sit & read books, or, nowadays, surf the Internet. But it`s more fun to go out, visit the buildings where events unfolded & transport yourself back in time. The story of how health care has developed from medieval times to the present day is told through seven walks in central London, each with a key theme, such as: * Competition between the church, crown, & city for control * Changing fortunes of particular districts * Radical reform between 1840 & 1880 * Individual creativity & entrepreneurship * Hospitals` unavoidable choice between merger or migration * Transformation of health care trades into professions * Development of primary care The book takes as much interest in one of the six ambulance stations build in 1915 by the London County Council as it does in the grandest teaching hospital. Although some important buildings have been destroyed, & others are threatened, many remain. The walks aim to help preserve our legacy as, increasingly, former health care buildings are converted into hotels, offices, homes, & shops. Awareness of their original functions is in danger of being lost. The book also aims to increase our understanding of the current challenges we face in trying to improve health care. For there are many lessons to be learnt from the past. Packed full of curious & surprising facts about medicine & beautifully illustrated with maps, photographs, & images, this is the perfect guide book for anyone with a passion for urban walks, the history of London, &, of course, medicine. ...

London is strewn with waterways, but the River Thames twisting through the capital can be seen from a radically different perspective in the futuristic Docklands area to the more sleepy suburbs of Putney, Chiswick & Barnes. Walking London`s Waterways is an exploration, in 21 carefully researched walks, of London`s varied waterways in all their glory. Gilly Cameron-Cooper`s engaging text is steeped in historical detail, & is accompanied by clear & detailed route maps & enchanting photographs. ...

In 1818, when Keats was 22-years old, he & his friend Charles Brown embarked on a walking tour through northern Engl&, Ireland & Scotl&, starting in Lancaster & finishing 44 days & over 600 miles later, in Scotl&, just north of Inverness. The book recreates Keats' tour & consists of three sections. In an informative introduction, Carol Kyros Walker discusses Keats' circumstances & places his trip in the context of the social & political events of the time. At the centre of the book are over 150 photographs, many in colour, taken by Walker as she retraced Keats' footsteps & tried to simulate the circumstances under which Keats would have viewed the scenes, photographing on the date & time of day of his arrival. Finally there are the letters & poems that Keats wrote during the tour & the journal that Brown later published, all annotated to relate them both to Keats' other works, & to the contemporary circumstances of the journey. The tour, which Keats envisaged as a prologue to his future writing, had dire consequences for his health & probably hastened his death three years later. Yet it inspired a sequence of lively letters & poems that reveal a high-spirited, curious, reflective, occasionally bawdy & immensely gifted young writer. ...
