Val d' Orcia at 1:25, 000 in a series of hiking maps from Edizioni Multigraphic covering Tuscany, parts of Umbria, & the adjoining areas. The cartography is rather old fashioned & sometimes not as clear as in the other map series but for many areas, especially for parts of Tuscany, these are the only hiking maps available. Most maps have contours at 25-metre intervals, with some relief shading & colouring for forests. An overprint highlights hiking paths, including all the popular hiking routes such as the Grandi Sentieri della Provincia di Siena, etc. The overprint also shows campsites &, where appropriate, mountain refuges & other types of alpine accommodation. Some of the maps indicate latitude & longitude at the map corners, but with longitude sometimes based on Rome rather than Greenwich. Map legends vary, most maps include English. Map No. 052, Val d' Ultimo/ Ultental, from Kompass in a series providing detailed coverage of the Dolomites & Lake Garda area & supplementing their main series of walking maps of Italy at 1:50, 000. Maps in this series have a more detailed base & smaller contour interval than coverage at 1:50, 000. Cartography: maps at 1:25, 000 have contours at 25-m intervals. An overprint shows local & long-distance footpaths, including all the high level routes (Alte Vie). The maps also show the via ferrata paths along the iron rails & ladders fitted into the rock faces. Val de Travers area in the central part of the Swiss Jura from Ste-Croix & Yverdon-les-Bains to Neuchâtel, including most of the Lake Neuchâtel, at 1:50, 000 in a series from Hallwag covering Switzerland’s popular hiking regions on light, waterproof & tear-resistant maps highlighting long-distance paths: the nine national routes plus special regional routes, as well as other local hiking trails. Cartography, identical to the standard version of the survey, is highly regarded for its superb use of graphic relief & hill shading to provide an almost 3-D picture of Switzerland`s mountainous terrain. An overprint highlights routes maintained by the SHF, distinguishing between hiking routes, mountain routes requiring proper footwear, & alpine routes where equipment is needed.
