Trouble is My Business is a collection of four riveting novellas from Raymond Chandler. In the first of the four cases in Trouble is My Business, LA PI Philip Marlowe is offered a job that leaves a bad taste in the mouth: smearing a girl who`s `got her hooks into a rich man`s pup`. Before too long Marlowe`s up to his neck in corpses & cops & he`s taken pity on the girl. There`s nothing like making trouble of your business... The four novellas collected here are quintessential Raymond Chandler: slick, crystal-clear writing that pins the reader to the seat & won`t let go until the last page is turned. Praise for Raymond Chandler:` Chandler`s prose flies off the pages like a burst from a Tommy gun. Chandler was perhaps the finest exponent of the fledgling genre now known as pulp fiction` Scottish Field` One of the greatest crime writers, who set the standards others still try to attain` Sunday Times ` Nobody can write like Chandler on his home turf, not even Faulkner... An original... A great artist` Boston Review` Raymond Chandler invented a new way of talking about America, & America has never looked the same to us since` Paul Auster Raymond Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888 & moved to England with his family when he was twelve. He attended Dulwich College, Alma Mater to some of the twentieth century`s most renowned writers. Returning to America in 1912, he settled in California, worked in a number of jobs, & later married. It was during the Depression era that he seriously turned his hand to writing & his first published story appeared in the pulp magazine Black Mask in 1933, followed six years later by his first novel. The Big Sleep introduced the world to Philip Marlowe, the often imitated but never-bettered hard-boiled private investigator. It is in Marlowe`s long shadow that every fictional detective must stand
- & under the influence of Raymond Chandler`s addictive prose that every crime author must write.

Eventually rescued after undergoing terrible privations, the leading characters all find their ideals tested & their smug assumptions of military & moral superiority severely shaken. In ” Troubles”, Major Brendan Archer travels to Ireland in the aftermath of World War I in order to meet his fiancee Angela in a remote seaside hotel owned by her father. Angela dies unexpectedly, but Archer remains in Kilnalough, captivated by the Majestic & its inhabitants, & seemingly unaware of the approaching political storm as Ireland dissolves into revolt & civil war. Both novels combine high comedy with vivid realism & reveal Farrell as ”one of the finest post-colonial novelists”. (John Sutherland). ...

The pseudonymous Italian author of Days of Abandonment returns with a daughter`s attempt to unlock the mystery of her mother`s death by drowning following years of domestic abuse. Days before her body washed ashore near her hometown of Naples, Amalia called her oldest daughter, Delia, now 45, with shocking news that she was with a man—not her estranged husb&, a two-bit painter—then hung up, laughing. After the funeral (Amalia`s husband doesn`t show), Delia goes in search of the story behind the expensive new brassiere Amalia was found wearing at her death, incongruous for a poor seamstress who deliberately downplayed her good looks to avoid arousing her husband`s savage jealousy. Caserta, a man who acted as Delia`s father`s agent as well as rival for Amalia`s attention, plays a role here—and in Delia`s past. In tactile, beautifully restrained prose, Ferrante makes the domestic violence that tore the household apart evident, including the child Delia`s attempts to guard her mother from the beatings of her father. By the time of the denouement, Ferrante has forcefully delineated how the complicity in violence against women perpetuates a brutal cycle of repetition & silence. ...
