A big city in a small package, San Francisco's status as a cosmopolitan cultural center has been further boosted by a slew of museum collections reopening in brand new, purpose-built landmark buildings. The Contemporary Jewish Museum, the Mexican Museum & the California Academy of Sciences are all scheduled to open their doors in new premises in 2008. The city that begat the beat generation, hippies & radical politics, & was the inspiration for writers from Armistead Maupin to Amy Tan, continues to burst with creativity & a cutting-edge political consciousness. Way ahead in the green stakes, San Francisco plans to be the first US city to ban plastic bags; meanwhile, the city's gay community, always keen to rebel against the mainstream, is in revolt against its own stereotypes with a burgeoning 'alternaqueer' scene. & with growth in San Francisco itself restricted by the boundary of the bay, forces of regeneration & renewal are making themselves felt in once-gritty Oakland & other areas of the East Bay. ...

In this intriguing & very personal book, part diary, part memoir, P. D. James considers the twelve months of her life between her 77th & 78th birthdays, & looks back on her earlier life. With all her familiar skills as a writer she recalls what it was like to be a schoolgirl in the 1920s & 1930s in Cambridge, & then giving birth to her second daughter during the worst of the Doodlebug bombardment in London during the war. It follows her work, starting out as an administrator in the National Health Service, then on to the Home Office in the forensic & criminal justice departments. She later served as a Governor of the BBC, an influential member of the British Council, the Arts Council & the Society of Authors, & eventually entering the House of Lords. Along the way, this diary & personal memoir deals with her burgeoning reputation as a novelist, starting with Cover Her Face in 1962, & with the craft of the classical detective story. Time Out Venice

With the inauguration after ten years of the newly expanded Accademia gallery, Venice`s grandi maestri are fighting back against the lagoon city`s slew of cutting-edge contemporary offerings. And while lambent madonnas continue to preside in the ageless gloom of any number of ancient churches, the modernist jewel of Carlo Scarpa`s Olivetti showroom in St Mark`s square has been returned to the public after loving restoration. Time Out Venice`s team of local experts gives the lie to La Serenissima`s reputation as unchanging museum. Charting new openings and major revamps in a city where it pays to look beyond the tourist-trade veneer and take a peek its own unique way of life, the guide leads you to restaurants where Venetians dine, shops where the glass really is blown in Murano and
exquisite corners where the visiting hordes seem light years away.
