British cycling is the best in the world. Bradley Wiggins won the 2012 Tour de France then less than 10 days later won the time trial at the London Olympics. Shortly after that, Britain`s track team dominated the velodrome for the second Games in a row by topping the cycling medals table. & that was on top of Nicole Cooke`s gold in the women`s 2008 Olympic road race, which merely added to her outstanding career, in which she had already won the women`s version of the Tour de France twice, in 2006 & 2007. These are just some of the highlights of Britain`s cycling pedigree. But this success did not come overnight, & this fantastic new book delves into the history of Britain`s illustrious history in the world`s major cycling events & details the path British cyclists have taken to collectively become the world`s pre-eminent cycling nation. It looks at all the characters, from Reg Harris, a track superstar & household name in the 1940s, & Tom Simpson, whose exploits in the 1967 Tour de France cost him his life, to Chris Boardman, 1992 Olympic track champion, & Mark Cavendish, road racing`s newest sprint hero, with dozens more in between. It examines what these exceptional athletes had to do to get to the top of their respective events & the stories that surrounded their success, all set against the rich history, rivalries & culture of the races they took part in. It examines all the cycling disciplines, including mountain biking & BMX, where British cyclists such as Steve Peat & Shanaze Reade have been world champions. Featuring first hand interviews with the leading riders from across the eras, this book is the definitive guide to this amazing & largely untold story. ...

After the Great War, the millions killed on the battlefields were eclipsed by the millions more civilians carried off by disease & starvation when the conflict was over. Haunted by memories, the Allies were determined that the end of the Second World War would not be followed by a similar disaster, & they began to lay plans long before victory was assured. Confronted by an entire continent starving & uprooted, Allied planners devised strategies to help all `displaced persons`, & repatriate the fifteen million people who had been deprived of their homes & in many cases forced to work for the Germans. But over a million Jews, Poles, Ukrainians, Latvians, Lithuanians, Estonians & Yugoslavs refused to go home. This book offers a radical reassessment of the aftermath of World War II. Unlike most recent writing about the 1940s, it assesses the events & personalities of that decade in terms of contemporary standards & values. This the true & epic story of how millions ultimately found relief, reconciliation & a place to call home. ...

What happens to a man who has his ear pressed to the lives of others but not much life of his own? When Stephen Donaldson joins the Institute, he anticipates excitement, romance & new status. Instead he gets the tape-recorded conversations of ancient communists & ineffectual revolutionaries, until the day he is assigned a new case: the ultra-secret Phoenix. Is Phoenix really working for a foreign power? Stephen hardly cares; it is the voice of the target`s wife that mesmerises him. This is December 1981. Bombs are exploding, a cold war is being waged, another war is just over the horizon & the nation is transfixed by weekly instalments of Brideshead Revisited. Dangerously in love, & lonely, Stephen sets himself up for a vertiginous fall that will forever change his life. As beautiful as it is intense, The Long Room is the dazzling new novel from an award-winning writer. With her mastery of the perfect detail, Francesca Kay explores a mind under pressure & the compelling power of imagination. ...

In “ The Long Shadow” the critically acclaimed author David Reynolds explores the true impact of World War I on the rest of the 20th century & demonstrates that Britain, more than perhaps any other nation, is still struggling to comprehend the 1914-1918 conflict in terms broader than individual personal tragedies, however moving, of young men whose lives were cut off in their prime for no evident purpose. The author’s broad historical perspective sets out show that some of the Great War`s legacies were negative & pernicious but others proved transformative in a positive sense. Exploring big themes such as democracy & empire or nationalism & capitalism, & re-examining the differing impacts of the War on Britain, Ireland & the United States, the book provides an impressive overview of the war’s legacy during the rest of the 20th century. ...
