This book shows you how to tie 50 knots. Some have been chosen for their fame, some for their beauty & some because they are knots that everyone should know how to tie. On every great theme, there are always possible variations, &, as the text makes clear, from time to time people come up with new effective methods of tying. Some of us may be destined to create knots that will bear our names for eternity, but first we need to study the time-honoured techniques: an intricate art that has been practised since before poetry or painting were dreamt of, which can`t be mastered in five minutes. Many of the knots featured are strongly associated with
- & probably originated
- from sailing, but even the saltiest of them have extensive applications on land: adhesive tape & Velcro have their uses, but they have not rendered knots redundant; no technological advance ever will.

Cambridge, 1961. A group of students set off on the trip of a lifetime. Against the backdrop of the Cold War they travel through the Soviet Union to the Middle East, South Asia & on to Africa. Their mode of transport? The iconic VW Kombi. This book tells the story of that trip, not just the people they met & the places they saw, but the many experiences
- sometimes nerve-wracking, sometimes bizarre
- that they encountered along the way. It provides a fascinating insight into a world on the brink of change
- seen through the eyes of nine young men fresh from university. The two VW Kombis doggedly traversed treacherous mountain passes, near-impossible roads, jungle tracks & river crossings on their journey through Anatolia, the Middle East, Asia & Africa. This book is an affectionate & highly entertaining re-creation of the relationship between the nine young travellers & their companions, the two VW Kombis which functioned as transport, shelter, canteen & home. The Kosova Liberation Army (KLA) was the first successful insurgent movement in Europe since the Second World War. In the struggle against Milosevic`s Serbia it developed from a tiny group in the Swiss political underground in the 1980s to an 18, 000 strong military force that was allied with NATO between 1997 & 1999. The KLA drew on deep historical traditions of resistance to Serbian rule in Kosova, but in other respects was highly innovative & was the first postmodern insurgency for which the image it carried in the media was almost as important as its achievements in the campaign. In this ground-breaking & innovative history, James Pettifer traces the development of the force using previously unknown documents from Russian, American, Serbian & Swiss archives, numerous interviews with participants & observers, & eye-witness material. The book focuses in particular depth on the work of the KLA leaders in secret organisations prior to the war, & how Milosevic misunderstood the nature of the opponent he was facing. This also applied to many NATO nations, who often saw the unique Kosova struggle as an extension of the earlier Bosnian & Croatian conflicts. James Pettifer draws on years of study of the region & personal knowledge of many of the KLA & other leaders involved to write what will become the standard account of the origins of the conflict. ...
