The glamorous daughter of an African chief shares a pineapple with a slave trader.. . Surveyors in British Columbia eat tinned Australian rabbit.. . Diamond prospectors in Guyana prepare an iguana curry... In twenty meals The Hungry Empire tells the story of how the British created a global network of commerce & trade in foodstuffs that moved people & plants from one continent to another, re-shaping landscapes & culinary tastes. To be Britishwas to eat the world. The Empire allowed Britain to harness the globe`s edible resources from cod fish & salt beef to spices, tea & sugar. By the twentieth century the wheat to make the working man`s loaf of bread was supplied by Canada & his Sunday leg of lamb had been fattened on New Zealand`s grasslands. Lizzie Collingham takes us on a wide-ranging culinary journey, charting the rise of sugar to its dominant position in our diets & locating the origins of the food industry in the imperial trade in provisions. Her innovative approach brings a fresh perspective to the making of the Empire, uncovering its decisive role in the shaping of the modern diet & revealing how virtually every meal we eat still contains a taste of empire. ...

The Hungry Tide is a rich, exotic saga set in Calcutta & in the vast archipelago of islands in the Bay of Bengal. An Indian myth says that when the river Ganges first descended from the heavens, the force of the cascade was so great that the earth would have been destroyed if it had not been for the god Shiva, who tamed the torrent by catching it in his dreadlocks. It is only when the Ganges approaches the Bay of Bengal that it frees itself & separates into thousands of wandering strands. The result is the Sundarbans, an immense stretch of mangrove forest, a half-drowned land where the waters of the Himalayas merge with the incoming tides of the sea. It is this vast archipelago of islands that provides the setting for Amitav Ghosh`s new novel. In the Sundarbans the tides reach more than 100 miles inland & every day thousands of hectares of forest disappear only to re-emerge hours later. Dense as the mangrove forests are, from a human point of view it is only a little less barren than a desert. There is a terrible, vengeful beauty here, a place teeming with crocodiles, snakes, sharks & man-eating tigers. This is the only place on earth where man is more often prey than predator. & it is into this terrain that an eccentric, wealthy Scotsman named Daniel Hamilton tried to create a utopian society, of all races & religions, & conquer the might of the Sundarbans. In January 2001, a small ship arrives to conduct an ecological survey of this vast but little-known environment, & the scientists on board begin to trace the journeys of the descendants of this society. ...

The Hunt

With over 240 breathtaking photographs and footage from the landmark BBC series, The Hunt captures the dramatic encounters of predator and prey in an entirely new light. Featuring the extraordinary strategies of a huge range of predators, from cheetahs and African wild dogs to killer whales and polar bears, these images and stories will revolutionise what you thought you knew about life in the wild. Whether through speed, stamina or complex subterfuge, each creature`s strategy is honed to its environment - and remarkable adaptations mean that the hunted often can, and do, outwit their hunters. It`s a life-or-death duel where each animal`s skills are stretched to the very limit. The final chapter of the book goes behind the scenes to recount the adventures of the production teams as
they themselves stalk their quarry - and are sometimes stalked - to discover never-before-seen species and previously undocumented behaviours. From the producers of Frozen Planet and Planet Earth, The Hunt reveals in astonishing detail the most surprising and significant events in the natural world.
