Maps have been invaluable throughout Canada`s history. They promised fame & fortune to early merchant-adventurers & guided army commanders. They legitimized a politician`s dominion & allowed businessmen to stake new claims. & they helped ordinary citizens build communities. Terra Nostra celebrates the mapping of Canada, in part by telling the stories of the exceptional individuals who helped to create the maps. Drawn from the rich cartographic holdings of Library & Archives Canada, it spans four centuries
- from the portolan charts of the early explorers to recent aerial images of east coast ice floes. Canada`s maps provide evidence of our nation`s technical accomplishments & offer insight into the development of our geographical knowledge. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the official Atlas of Canada; Terra Nostra provides a beautifully illustrated & timely celebration of the country`s cartographic history.

In the critically acclaimed Desert Divers & Exterminate All the Brutes, Sven Lindqvist travelled through Africa`s deserts & unearthed the cruelty of colonialism. Now he has done the same for Australia. Lindqvist travels through the south of the country, lyrically describing its landscape, flora & fauna & geology, while also telling the history of the country & revealing the shocking treatment of its Aboriginal peoples. He catalogues some truly shocking abuses, such as the rounding up of Aborigine women for transportation to the chillingly named ` Isle of the Dead` for inappropriate & often fatal syphilis treatment, & the extensive forced separation of `half-blood` children from their families to squalid prison-like camps. Stretching from the formation of the Australian continent 600 million years ago to the 2002 hunger strikes in the Woomera detention camp, Terra Nullius leaves us with a strong sense of Australia as a piece of earth, steeped in geological & tragic human history. ...

Exciting investigations in north-west China are about to reveal more of the mysteries of the huge mausoleum of the Qin Emperor, a portion of which was accidently discovered in 1974 by farmers who were digging a well. The second phase of an international research project began in 2011 & is ongoing. More recently still, in March 2015, promising new excavations began in Pit 2, with exciting fresh discoveries already announced. Much new material has become available since 2008, the year of the major sell-out exhibitions in London & Paris. Terracotta Warriors seeks to examine one of China`s most famous archaeological discoveries in light of these new findings. The book begins with the discovery of the terracotta warriors & then tells the history of the Qin Dynasty & as much as is known about the construction of the 3rd century BCE mausoleum based on the work of the historian Sima Qian (145-90 BCE). He wrote that the First Emperor was buried with palaces, towers, officials, valuable artefacts & wondrous objects. According to this account, 100 flowing rivers were simulated using mercury, & above them the ceiling was decorated with heavenly bodies below which were the features of the l&. The new findings & the description of the mausoleum based on the"ed historical accounts suggest that the next discoveries may surpass the size & conception of the original discovery of the terracotta warriors. In the second part, Edward Burman asks: who built it & how? He also questions the role of the terracotta warriors who may be servants & not warriors, & what their function may have been in the afterlife. In the third section, he anticipates the discoveries & describes the new methods of excavation & preservation. ...

- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.
