No empire in history built so variously as the British empire in India: the buildings there attest to the richness of an imperial presence that lasted
- from the first trading settlement to the end of the Raj
- some three hundred years. The attitude of the British to India was compounded partly of arrogance, but partly also of homesickness, & it shows in their constructions. Georgian terraces were adapted to tropical conditions, Victorian railway stations were elaborately orientalized, seaside villas were adjusted to suit Himalayan conditions, & everywhere the fundamental ambivalence of the British empire, a baffling mixture of good & evil, was mirrored in the imperial architecture. This book, now reissued with a new introduction by Simon Winchester, was the first to describe the whole range of British constructions in India. The text & photographs illustrate these buildings not simply as physical objects, but as reflections of an empire`s mingled emotions. Stones of Empire charts an enterprise in architecture, engineering, & social adaptation unique in human history.

The Stones of Venice has been described as the greatest guidebook ever written. Read by all who went there & thousands who did not, it opened Victorian eyes to the glories of a city even then under threat, & transformed the study & practice of architecture forever. It took Ruskin almost half a million words to launch this devastating attack on the Renaissance, & to explain how to see & make true architecture. They were ”glorious words, but too many, ” as J.G. Links put it while preparing this edition. Links, himself the greatest exponent of Venice of the 20”th” century, designed this abridgement to convey all the excitement, urgency, & love of Venice to a new generation of readers. ...

If war can be reduced to a competition over money & control over the l&, people, & the resources that produce it then it should be possible to pay in advance to prevent it. Author Shepherd Iverson uses this underlying premise to provide an alternative to every book written about the North Korean nuclear threat & growing East Asia militarism. Far less permeable to economic sanctions than Iran has been, North Korea requires a different sort of economic approach to peace. Taking a cultural as well as a geoeconomic approach, Stop North Korea: A Radical New Approach to Solving the North Korea Standoff proposes that reunification is the best, possibly only, way to denuclearize North Korea, end its government`s oppressive regime & create a fruitful, sustainable peace. The book further proposes that the way to achieve reunification is, essentially, to buy it while there is still a chance to prevent war & repair the damage already done. It is business-as-peace-crafting in a way that has never been imagined before. It all begins with this basic scenario: Imagine that you control a multi-billion dollar capital fund & North Korea is a large underperforming corporation. You see it is undervalued & want to take it over, but it is controlled by an old-fashioned board of directors the Kim family & a small number of ultra-elites who will not negotiate a deal. In this regressive situation it is logical to offer shareholders the larger number of political & military elites, government managers & bureaucrats, & the general population a higher price for their shares to convince them to overrule their board of directors. How to create & utilize a fund for offering such incentives; how to incentivize a nation that has become culturally ready for this sea change; why these incentives will succeed where coercion & diplomacy have failed; & how they will result in a healthy & prosperous reunified Korea are the brilliantly treated in this fascinating & hopeful work. Academics & students, strategists, policymakers & anyone interested in the possibility of a peaceful resolution to the North Korea problem should read this book. ...
