From the publishers behind Banksy`s mega-selling Wall & Piece, comes the fully-illustrated, beautifully presented book by feted London street artist, Stik. Stik first came to notoriety as an underground street artist who painted life-size stick figures during the night around London`s East End. As a firm believer in the right to protest, the freedom of speech, & basic human rights, Stik has now painted murals in cities, towns & villages all over the world, focusing his work in communities which have not been afraid to express themselves in the face of repression & disenfranchisement. Having gained an international following, Stik credits his audience with the intelligence to fill in the details with just six lines & two dots to imply emotion. Each piece is a meditation. This is the first collected volume of his work to date. It reveals the political & artistic inspiration behind the work of one of this country`s most brilliant & inspiring artists. ...

The tropical island of Sri Lanka is a paradise for tourists, but in 2009 it became a hell for its Tamil minority, as decades of civil war between the Tamil Tiger guerrillas & the government reached its bloody climax. Caught in the crossfire were hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren, doctors, farmers, fishermen, nuns & other civilians. & the government ensured through a strict media blackout that the world was unaware of their suffering. Now, a UN enquiry has called for war-crimes investigations. Those crimes are recounted here to the wider world for the first time in sobering, shattering detail. ...

Still Life is a unique & hauntingly beautiful photographic study of the Antarctic huts that served as expedition bases for explorations led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott & Sir Ernest Shackleton. At the turn of the twentieth century Antarctica was the focus of one of the last great races of exploration & discovery. From 1895 to 1917, Antarctic explorers set off from their huts in search of adventure, science & glory but some, such as Scott, were never to return. The World Wars intervened & the huts were left as time capsules of Edwardian life; a portrait of King Edward VII hangs amid seal blubber, sides of mutton, a jar of gherkins, penguin eggs, cufflinks & darned trousers. One of New Zealand`s best known photographers, Jane Ussher, was invited by the Antarctic Heritage Trust to record `the unusual, the hidden & minutiae of these sites`. The Executive Director of the Trust, Nigel Watson, provides an informative introduction to the history & atmosphere of each hut & detailed photographic captions. ...

Have you ever arrived in a hotel room & been baffled by the information provided? Beware of your luggage. In your room, you will find a minibar which is filled with alcoholics. Do not throw urine around. Have you ever been to a restaurant & wondered what on earth to order? Bored Meat Stew, Lorry Driver Soup, or Kiss Lorraine. Have you ever arrived in an airport & found that the supposedly helpful signs just make you feel more lost? You are required to declare all sorts of private things. Departure. Bus stop. Car rental. Please buy your ticket consciously. Charlie Croker has, & in 2006 he gathered together what he thought was the definitive collection of English language howlers for his bestselling book ” Lost in Translation”. But he reckoned without the great British public. Not only was the book a smash hit, it also opened the floodgates to a deluge of emails & letters stuffed full of further mistranslations & mutilated phrases. From a leaflet from the Museum of Rasputin in Russia (which is apparently situated in a house that belonged a pilot fish Zubov) to a song title on a pirated Pink Floyd CD (” Come Fartably Numb”), the scrambled sentences just kept flooding in. At the same time Charlie has continued his travels & picked up gems of his own. With such a wealth of material, a sequel wasn`t just a necessity, it was a public service, & ” Still Lost in Translation” is even more addictive, whimsical & side-splittingly hilarious than the first book. ...

An insightful portrait of Muhammad Ali from the New York Times bestselling author of At the Altar of Speed & The Big Bam. It centers on the cultural & political implications of Ali`s refusal of service in the military--and the key moments in a life that was as high profile & transformative as any in the twentieth century. With the death of Muhammad Ali in June, 2016, the media & America in general have remembered a hero, a heavyweight champion, an Olympic gold medalist, an icon, & a man who represents the sheer greatness of America. New York Times bestselling author Leigh Montville goes deeper, with a fascinating chronicle of a story that has been largely untold. Muhammad Ali, in the late 1960s, was young, successful, brash, & hugely admired--but with some reservations. He was bombastic & cocky in a way that captured the imagination of America, but also drew its detractors. He was a bold young African American in an era when few people were as outspoken. He renounced his name--Cassius Clay--as being his `slave name, ` & joined the Nation of Islam, renaming himself Muhammad Ali. & finally in 1966, after being drafted, he refused to join the military for religious & conscientious reasons, triggering a fight that was larger than any of his bouts in the ring. What followed was a period of legal battles, of cultural obsession, & in some ways of being the very embodiment of the civil rights movement located in the heart of one man. Muhammad Ali was the tip of the arrow, & Leigh Montville brilliantly assembles all the boxing, the charisma, the cultural & political shifting tides, & ultimately the enormous waft of entertainment that always surrounded Ali. Muhammed Ali vs. the United States of America is an important & incredibly engaging book. ...
