London`s contribution to sport has been enormous; it is the home of cricket, rugby & tennis, & it was in London that many sports were first organised & codified. It was here that lawn tennis was first played on a rectangular court. The cricket club at Marylebone drew up the rules of cricket, & London possibly gave birth to the sport of boxing. Here too is the oldest cycling club & the oldest rowing race. & it was London that staged the first international championships of water polo, table-tennis & weightlifting. A well-illustrated book on this fascinating theme.
