NEW STREET PLAN CARTOGRAPHY FROM RAND Mc NALLY: Rand Mc Nally are currently changing the cartography of their street plans to a more “ European” style. In many titles streets are now shown by parallel lines, providing a much clearer, easier to read presentation. Better use of colouring indicates different types of land use and/or institutions (parks, shopping centres, academic institutions, etc) &, in most titles, different administrative units. More streets are annotated with block numbers. Some new editions still retain the traditional American presentation of streets by a single line, but with more prominent marking for various institutions, facilities & places of interest. Our cartography sample indicates which style is used in this title.COVERAGE: Rand Mc Nally street plans cover cities with their outer suburbs, prominently highlighting principal traffic arteries & connecting main streets. Railway & subway stations are marked. ...

Half the world`s languages are threatened with extinction over the next century, as English & the rest of the world`s top twenty languages drive all before them. What ways of looking at the world will die along with them, what cultural riches, what experiences, histories & memories? & how does it feel to be one of the last remaining speakers of a languages that is on its way to extinction? What chance is there of saving any of these languages? & is it feasible in the long term or even worthwhile? Mark Abley`s journeys among the speakers of languages at the brink take him to aboriginal Australia (where he meets the last surviving fluent male speaker of Mati Ke, who cannot speak to the only other fluent speaker, as she is his sister & in their culture it is forbidden to speak to siblings once one has reached puberty), & to American Indian reservations, as well as to places where the languages are fighting back
- Wales, the Faeroe islands, the Isle of Man
- as well as charting the triumphant return of Hebrew.

The first ever spomenik guidebook, with over 75 examples alongside map references & information on why they exist & who built them. Spomenik` the Serbo-Croat/ Slovenian word for `monument`
- refers to a series of memorials built in Tito`s Republic of Yugoslavia from the 1960s-1990s, marking the horror of the occupation & the defeat of Axis forces during World War II. Hundreds were built across the country, from coastal resorts to remote mountains. Through these imaginative forms of concrete & steel, a classless, forward-looking, socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged. Instead of looking to the ideologically aligned Soviet Union for artistic inspiration, Tito turned to the west & works of abstract expressionism & minimalism. As a result, Yugoslavia was able to develop its own distinct identity through these brutal monuments, which were used as political tools to articulate Tito`s personal vision of a new tomorrow. Today, following the breakup of the country & the subsequent Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, some have been destroyed or abandoned. Many have suffered the consequences of ethnic tensions
- once viewed as symbols of hope they are now the focus of resentment & anger. This book brings together the largest collection of spomeniks published to date. Each has been extensively photographed & researched by the author, to make this book the most comprehensive survey of this obscure & fascinating architectural phenomenon. A fold-out map on the reverse of the dust jacket shows the exact location of each spomenik using GPS coordinates.

Spomeniks

Spomeniks literally meaning `Monuments` in Serbo-Croatian, look like spaceships conspicuously parked up in the middle of nowhere, alien to their surroundings, their bizarre beauty deriving from both their location and imaginative symbolism. Follow in the footsteps of French photographer Jonathan `Jonk` Jimenez as he tries to track down these super-sized public structures. Once numbering in their thousands and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, in particular ”young pioneers” for their communist and patriotic education. Pushing architecture to its limits, Spomeniks are what happens when brutalism, symbolism, space age aesthetics and abstraction meet.
