David Livingstone (1813-1873) is revered as one of history`s greatest explorers & missionaries, the first European to cross Africa, & the first to find Victoria Falls & the source of the Congo River. In this exciting new edition, Jeal draws on fresh sources & archival discoveries to provide the most fully rounded portrait of this complicated man
- dogged by failure throughout his life despite his full share of success. Using Livingstone`s original field notebooks, Jeal finds that the explorer`s problems with his African followers were far graver than previously understood. From recently discovered letters he elaborates on the explorer`s decision to send his wife Mary back home to Engl&. He also uncovers fascinating information about Livingstone`s importance to the British Empire & about his relationship with the journalist-adventurer Henry Morton Stanley. An extraordinary, passionate & personal journey into Africa`s past. ` The most enthralling account out of Africa for years.` Daily Mail. `” Livingstone`s Tribe” is excellent... Taylor is an intelligent & stimulating companion.` Financial Times ` At the book`s heart is a riveting examination of Livingstone`s tribe...the whites of post-independence Africa.` Independent on Sunday ` Taylor`s expedition into the interior of the continent`s colonial past has got everything that such a book should have.` Guardian ` Stephen Taylor, a third-generation emigre of British descent, finds a melancholy collection of white misfits & failures...as well as a heroic, dwindling clutch of missionaries still holding the line. The catalogue of theft, corruption, murder & superstition that Taylor chronicles makes appalling, fascinating reading. Yet Taylor is no Colonel Blimp, rather an anti-apartheid liberal who fled the old South Africa & welcomed independence for Mugabe`s Zimbabwe.` Daily Mail ` Sights & travel experiences are vividly described & people both from Livingstone`s & from the other tribes are handled particularly well.` Sunday Times ...

This title is now available in a digitally produced edition.LAC’s provincial series is gradually being changed to a new style of digitally derived cartography, so presentation of adjoining titles may vary. All the maps have hill shading to represent the general relief with spot heights for selected peaks, & show a few more local roads & rough tracks than the other road map series. Intermediate road distances are indicated. Regional, provincial & communal borders are marked, & railways, funiculars, airports, sea ferry links & campsites are shown. The legend is in Italian only. The new, digitally produced editions are indexed & have enhanced, more finely drawn cartography: the hill-shading is less bold, motorway service areas are marked, natural parks are highlighted & an expanded range of symbols indicates various landmarks & sites, e.g. antiquities, churches, etc. Two styles of the new cartography are produced, differing only in the colour of the predominant background shading: grey or yellow/green. Some of the new editions include geographical coordinates for the map corners. The index of localities is on the reverse. To see all the titles in this series please click on the series link. ...
