Seven Pillars of Wisdom recreates epic events with extraordinary vividness; for anyone enraptured by David Lean’s classic vision of this tumultuous time in Middle Eastern history, this book is an absolute must. Although `continually & bitterly ashamed` that the Arabs had risen in revolt against the Turks as a result of fraudulent British promises of self-rule, T E Lawrence led them in a triumphant campaign which revolutionized the art of war. In the words of E M Forster, ` Round this tent-pole of a military chronicle, T E has hung an unexampled fabric of portraits, descriptions, philosophies, emotions, adventures, dreams`. During the Arab Revolt Lawrence kept many notes pertaining to his experiences, & began working them into a collected narrative in 1919; yet while changing trains at Reading railway station, he mislaid them inside a briefcase, never to be found again. A year later, he set about rewriting as much as he could from memory; thankfully the text was eventually self-published by Lawrence- unfortunately at a great cost, to the point of bankruptcy. However flawed, Lawrence is one of the 20th century`s most fascinating figures. This is the greatest monument to his character & achievements. ...

As tense as a thriller, as vivid as an undercover documentary, Matias Nespolo`s bold & brilliant first novel takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride through a place of crime & deprivation. Set in Buenos Aires at the time of Argentina`s financial crash, & seen through the eyes of twenty-year-old Gringo, it tells the story of two boys on the cusp of adulthood who have no choice but to join the gang warfare that rules their community. At least, Gringo`s friend Chueco thinks they have no choice. He`s determined to prove himself hard enough to get into El Jetita`s gang, but smart enough to remain his own man. Gringo is more intelligent. He knows that gangs don`t work like that: you obey the leader or else. As the two get drawn ever deeper into a pitched battle between El Jetita & his rival Charly over control of the barrio`s drugs & prostitution, Gringo sees a life of love & loss pass before his eyes. A few days before, he was joking with Chueco about killing cats. Now, he`s fighting to save his skin. Written in the street-slang of the slums, & full of fantastic characters from the sympathetic Gringo to the ruthless gang leader El Jetita or the grotesque bar owner Fat Farias, this is one of those novels that is about one place & every place. While its depiction of Buenos Aires rings vibrantly true in every detail, the barrio could be any place of urban deprivation where young men are pushed into a violence that, ultimately, will destroy them. ...
