Humans have put the Earth's resources to extraordinary use. Carbon provides us with heat, light & mobility at the flick of a switch. From silver came photography, the preservation of memories, & a task which for centuries was confined to painters, sketchers & our imaginations. Silver in turn was eventually replaced by silicon, an element which enables us to communicate & transmit information across the globe in an instant. But our use of the Earth's resources is not always for the benefit of humankind. Our relationship with the elements is one of great ambivalence. Uranium produces both productive nuclear power & destructive atomic bombs; iron is the bloody weapon of war, but also the economic tool of peace; our desire for alluring gold is the foundation of global trade, but has also led to the death of millions. This book vividly describes how seven key elements have shaped the world around us
- for good & for bad. Seven Elements takes you on an adventure of human passion, ingenuity & discovery. This journey is far from over: we continue to find surprising new uses for these seven elements. Discover how titanium pervades modern consumer society; how natural gas is transforming the global energy sector; & how an innovative new form of carbon could be starting a technological revolution. Seven Elements is a unique mix of science, history & politics, interwoven with the author's extensive personal & professional experience.

The Argentines grill more meat per capita than any nation on earth. Francis Mallmann was raised in the mountains of Patagonia, trained in the great kitchens of Europe, & returned home to become the top chef in Buenos Aires & the biggest star on South American food television. In 1995 he gave up cooking fancy food & applied all the lessons of haute cuisine to maximizing flavor & texture with wood-fired cookery. His food is astoundingly bright & vivid with burnt, crusty tastes both rustic & refined. Recipes range across the menu, including non-grilled recipes for what to eat while you`re building the fire. Most recipes are adapted for cooking indoors, so this is a cookbook for any season, any kitchen. Francis` seven fires are: Chapa
- a cast iron griddle or skillet (the form most used in this book); Little Hell
- cooking with fire above & below the food; Parilla
- basically what`s called barbecuing or grilling in the US; Horno de Barro
- cooking in a wood-fired clay oven; Rescoldo
- cooking food by burying in hot embers & ashes; Asador
- cooking whole pigs or lambs affixed to an iron cross that faces a bonfire; &, Caldero
- cooking in an iron cauldron or Dutch oven.

But what is the nature of their power & how did it develop? Why have these particular plants become the focus of gardens, literature & art? In order to find the answers, author & horticultural historian Jennifer Potter tracks this septet of flowers across the globe as she examines the influence they have had on civilizations through the ages. These are both histories & detective stories, full of incident & unexpected revelations. Here are the flowers of life & death; of purity & passion; of greed, envy & virtue; of hope & consolation; of the beauty that drives men wild. In this controversial new book, Daisy Christodoulou offers a thought-provoking critique of educational orthodoxy. Drawing on her recent experience of teaching in challenging schools, she shows through a wide range of examples & case studies just how much classroom practice contradicts basic scientific principles. She examines seven widely-held beliefs which are holding back pupils & teachers:
- Facts prevent understanding
- Teacher-led instruction is passive
- The 21st century fundamentally changes everything
- You can always just look it up -We should teach transferable skills
- Projects & activities are the best way to learn
- Teaching knowledge is indoctrination. In each accessible & engaging chapter, Christodoulou sets out the theory of each myth, considers its practical implications & shows the worrying prevalence of such practice. Then, she explains exactly why it is a myth, with reference to the principles of modern cognitive science. She builds a powerful case explaining how governments & educational organisations around the world have let down teachers & pupils by promoting & even mandating evidence-less theory & bad practice. This blisteringly incisive & urgent text is essential reading for all teachers, teacher training students, policy makers, head teachers, researchers & academics around the world.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom recreates epic events with extraordinary vividness; for anyone enraptured by David Lean’s classic vision of this tumultuous time in Middle Eastern history, this book is an absolute must. Although `continually & bitterly ashamed` that the Arabs had risen in revolt against the Turks as a result of fraudulent British promises of self-rule, T E Lawrence led them in a triumphant campaign which revolutionized the art of war. In the words of E M Forster, ` Round this tent-pole of a military chronicle, T E has hung an unexampled fabric of portraits, descriptions, philosophies, emotions, adventures, dreams`. During the Arab Revolt Lawrence kept many notes pertaining to his experiences, & began working them into a collected narrative in 1919; yet while changing trains at Reading railway station, he mislaid them inside a briefcase, never to be found again. A year later, he set about rewriting as much as he could from memory; thankfully the text was eventually self-published by Lawrence- unfortunately at a great cost, to the point of bankruptcy. However flawed, Lawrence is one of the 20th century`s most fascinating figures. This is the greatest monument to his character & achievements. ...

Seven League Boots

`I had been commissioned to go anywhere in the world I wished and write whatever pleased me. My only orders were to move fast, visit strange places, to meet whomever was interesting - and to start at once, ` Richard Halliburton`s fifth and last book, Seven League boots illustrates how he followed these orders with passion and abandon. America`s favorite adventurer dined with Haile Selassie and rode the Rhinoceros Express in Ethiopia; he had an audience with King Ibn Saud outside the gates of Mecca (which he had tried to sneak into) and finally rode an elephant over the Alps in the tracks of another great adventurer, Hannibal. This is Halliburton at his best: reckless and romantic. It is also the last chapter of a life that had, at its end, grown tragic. Nearing forty, physically
exhausted, and in financial trouble, Halliburton thought to roll the dice once again, hoping that the charm which had always saved him in the past would materialize one more time. But it was not to be. His last journey was fatal. Soon after finishing this book, he attempted to sail a junk across the Pacific, but never returned.
