Sanctuary is a captivating photographic portrait of the Angkor Temples of Cambodia by the globally acclaimed Magnum photographer Steve Mc Curry. Mc Curry has beautifully & evocatively photographed the temples of Angkor, which rank amongst the world's most impressive monuments. Over one hundred of his images of the site are collected in this stunning book, which documents a magical world of carved gods, weathered masonry, tangled vegetation & orange-robed monks. Angkor was the capital of the Khmer rulers from the end of the ninth century to the mid-fifteenth. Each built a state temple at the capital surrounded by walls, moats & embankments which were laid out in accordance to cosmological precepts. Designated a World Heritage site by Unesco, the temples attract tourists, archaeologists & art historians, as well as remaining a pilgrimage destination for Buddhist monks. Mc Curry first visited Angkor on an assignment for National Geographic magazine, for whom he has taken famous photographs all over the world. He has made many return visits, capturing overall a sublime portrait of the buildings, sculpture & people of Angkor. The winner of numerous honours, including first prize in the World Press awards & the Robert Capa Gold Medal, Mc Curry has previously published Portraits & South Southeast (both with Phaidon). The photographs are accompanied by an informative introduction on the history & meaning of Angkor by John Guy, a leading authority on the cultural history of Southeast Asia. Guy is curator of Indian & Southeast Asian sculpture at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, & Consultant to Unesco on historical monuments in Southeast Asia. ...

After the fall of Singapore in 1942, the conquering Japanese Army transferred some 2500 British & Australian prisoners to a jungle camp at Sandakan, on the east coast of North Borneo. There they were beaten, broken, worked to death, thrown into bamboo cages on the slightest pretext & subjected to tortures so ingenious & hideous that the victims were driven to the brink of madness. But it was only to be the beginning of the nightmare. In late 1944 when Allied aircraft began bombing the coastal towns of Sandakan & Jesselton, the Japanese resolved to abandon the prison camp & move the prisoners 250 miles inland to Ranau. The journey there became known as the Sandakan Death marches. Of the thousand plus prisoners who set out on the epic marches, only six survived. This is both their story & the story of the fallen. ...
