This book, published to coincide with a major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum to mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, centres on Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), the famous diarist & the greatest administrator of the Stuart Age. Not only a passionate diarist, Pepys was also a prolific correspondent who lived through & wrote about all the key events & leading individuals of his time: the Restoration of Charles II, the Great Plague, the Fire of London, the raid of the Dutch fleet in the river Medway, the Kings mistresses. Through a series of essays by leading experts, this publication reveals the rich diversity of his career & interests from the theatre, to advances in science & development of the Royal Navy. His life was so utterly entwined with the extraordinary period he lived through he was even a witness to the beheading of Charles I that the book becomes a portrait of the age. Each chapter has two or three essays followed by discussion of specific objects & paintings. ...

Samuel Pepys is the astonishing biography by bestselling author Claire Tomalin 2002 Whitbread Book of the Year. Immaculately well done. Tomalin has managed to unearth a wealth of material about the uncharted life of Samuel Pepys. (Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday). Sex, drink, plague, fire, music, marital conflict, the fall of kings, corruption & courage in public life, wars, navies, public execution, incarceration in the Tower: Samuel Pepys' life is full of irresistible material, & Claire Tomalin seizes it with both hands. Fast, vivid, accessible. (Hermione Lee, Guardian). A rich, thoughtful & deeply satisfying account. It takes us behind & beyond the diary
- which means that, on finishing it, we can reread the diary with greater pleasure & understanding then ever before. (Noel Malcolm, Evening Standard). In Claire Tomalin, Pepys has found the biographer he deserves. Her perceptive, level-headed book finally restores to the life of the diarist its weight & dignity. (Lisa Jardine, New Statesman). A great achievement & a huge pleasure. A vivid chronicle of contemporary history seen through the all too human preoccupations of this ordinary & extraordinary man. (Diana Souhami, Independent). From the acclaimed author of Charles Dickens: A Life & The Invisible Woman, this celebrated biography casts new light on the remarkable diaries of Pepys & brings his story vividly to life once more. Claire Tomalin is the award-winning author of eight highly acclaimed biographies, including: The Life & Death of Mary Wollstonecraft; Shelley & His World; Katherine Mansfield: A Secret Life; The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan & Charles Dickens; Mrs Jordan's Profession; Jane Austen: A Life; Samuel Pepys: The Unequalled Self; Thomas Hardy: The Time-Torn Man &, most recently, Charles Dickens: A Life. A former literary editor of the New Statesman & the Sunday Times, she is married to the playwright & novelist Michael Frayn.

In 1611 an astonishing letter arrived at the the East India Trading Company in London after a tortuous seven-year journey. Englishman William Adams was one of only twenty-four survivors of a fleet of ships bound for Asia, & he had washed up in the forbidden land of Japan. The traders were even more amazed to learn that, rather than be horrified by this strange country, Adams had fallen in love with the barbaric splendour of Japan
- & decided to settle. He had forged a close friendship with the ruthless Shogun, taken a Japanese wife & sired a new, mixed-race family. Adams` letter fired up the London merchants to plan a new expedition to the Far East, with designs to trade with the Japanese & use Adams` contacts there to forge new commercial links. SAMURAI WILLIAM brilliantly illuminates a world whose horizons were rapidly expanding eastwards.
