TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

One of the titles in a series of large, indexed regional maps with fine, clear cartography. General relief is portrayed by hill-shading with selected spot heights without distracting from the other detail. The motorway network & recommended scenic routes stand out well from the background, but some may find minor local roads a little too faint. In some places exits from motorways are also rather lightly coloured. Intermediate driving distances are indicated throughout & special tourist routes are marked. The maps highlight picturesque towns & national parks, with a range of symbols marking campsites, youth hostels, museums, spas, various landmarks & places of interest, etc. Latitude & longitude grid is drawn at intervals of 10’. Sacramento in California on an indexed street plan from Rand Mc Nally in their extensive range of maps covering cities in the United States, with an enlargement showing in greater detail downtown Sacramento plus a road map of the surrounding region showing the road links with San Francisco, Napa & Sonoma Valleys, etc. Communities covered by this map include Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, , Rancho Cordova & West Sacramento.NEW STREET PLAN CARTOGRAPHY FROM RAND Mc NALLY: Rand Mc Nally are currently changing the cartography of their street plans to a more “ European” style. Better use of colouring indicates different types of land use and/or institutions (parks, shopping centres, academic institutions, etc) &, in most titles, different administrative units. More streets are annotated with block numbers. Some new editions still retain the traditional American presentation of streets by a single line, but with more prominent marking for various institutions, facilities & places of interest. Our cartography sample indicates which style is used in this title.COVERAGE: Rand Mc Nally street plans cover cities with their outer suburbs, prominently highlighting principal traffic arteries & connecting main streets. Britain is packed with places to visit that can be called 'sacred'. Many are tourist sites, such as Iona, Lindisfarne & Stonehenge. Many more are out-of-the-way pilgrimage destinations, druidic circles, holy wells or obscure islands that few people would find without this book. Some are only recognised as 'sacred' by people with a special interest: Karl Marx's tomb in Highgate cemetery or the island on Althorp where Princess Diana is buried. Sacred Britain journeys from pilgrimage sites with tombs of martyrs & scenes of medieval miracles to the remote islands of Iona, Bardsey & Lindisfarne, as well as to modern Buddhist, Hindu & Islamic shrines. It visits pre-historic stone circles & ancient chalk hill carvings such as the phallic Cerne Abbas giant. As well as sites of myth, legend, & apparition it covers shrines to philosophers & locations revered for their connections with art, music, literature, sport & crime. ...

We`ve all got one. A secret, special place. Hidden. Enclosed. A little greener & more fertile than the world outside. Here the birds are slightly more exotic, slightly more confiding, the grass greener & the fruit sweeter. To know such a place, to love such a place, is part of being human. Sometimes it`s a place of myth, like the Garden of Eden. Sometimes it exists in fictional form, like Narnia or Shangri-La. Sometimes it comes in memories of a golden day in childhood, or in a glorious, doomed love affair. Sometimes it`s a real place that we daren`t go back to, for fear that it
- or we
- had changed. & just occasionally it`s a real place. A place where you leave a small piece of your heart & return as often as you can so as not to lose it. It`s a place of privilege. Simon Barnes found such a place when he woke in his first morning in the Luangwa Valley in Zambia to find elephants eating the roof of his hut. It was a homecoming, & he has been faithful to that passion ever since. Here he has known peace, danger, discomfort, fear & a profound sense of oneness with the Valley, with all nature & with the world. With the Valley he found completion. This book explores the special places of the mind & the world, with special reference to the Luangwa Valley & the glorious support of the Valley`s great artist, Pam Carr. It`s a book about the quest for paradise, & the eternal human search to find such a paradise everywhere.

Described by some a mixture of Dostoyevsky & Mario Puzo, Sacred Games is a labyrinthine work with moments of wonderful irony. An unbelievably dense book, filled with every aspect one can imagine from such a tale; the seamier sides of life are on display, with everything from sex, death, violence, corruption, even nuclear bombs working their way into the dense tapestry Chandra has created. A book you will find yourself coming back to, each time a different aspect making itself known.
