Even before her launch, RMS Queen Mary earned a special place in history. Job number 534, as the new Cunard liner was known, was Britain's largest passenger ship by far. In 1930, construction was begun, but as the stranglehold of The Depression tightened, Cunard announced that work was to cease. The half-finished hull sat on Clydebank for over two years, but was far from forgotten. For the people of Britain, 534 became a beacon of hope; a barometer of the nation's economy. & so it was no coincidence that on the day work at John Brown's shipyard resumed, prices on the London Stock Exchange shot up. A new age had dawned. Without so much as entering the water, the new ship had won the hearts & minds of the British public. A few months later the first of a long line of 'firsts' began for the new liner. Britain's first ship over 1000 feet in length was ready to be launched. It would be the first occasion of its kind it to be reported live by BBC radio; & for the first time the consort of a reigning British monarch would do the honours. The liner's 31-year ocean-going career would break countless records & re-write history. And her popularity soon spread across the Atlantic as she won the affection of America. Today, she is enjoying retirement in the sun in Pier J, Long Beach, California as a floating hotel & events centre. Author David Ellery poses the 101 most crucial questions about her, from design, construction & machinery to stories concerning her name, interior design, & retirement, & provides detailed but concise answers to each one. How fast was Queen Mary? Is it true the Queen Mary is haunted? Is the new Queen Mary 2 anything like the original Queen Mary? The result is a thoroughly engaging & informative book that provides the essential information to the world's very last remaining 1930s superliner. ...

Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

Winner of the British Army Military Book of the Year 2011 The story of one of the most brutal battles in modern history -- fought at a major turning point of the Second World War. Kohima. In this remote Indian village near the border with Burma, a tiny force of British & Indian troops faced the might of the Imperial Japanese Army. Outnumbered ten to one, the defenders fought the Japanese hand to hand in a battle that was amongst the most savage in modern warfare. A garrison of no more than 1, 500 fighting men, desperately short of water & with the wounded compelled to lie in the open, faced a force of 15, 000 Japanese. They held the pass & prevented a Japanese victory that would have proved disastrous for the British. Another six weeks of bitter fighting followed as British & Indian reinforcements strove to drive the enemy out of India. When the battle was over, a Japanese army that had invaded India on a mission of imperial conquest had suffered the worst defeat in its history. Thousands of men lay dead on a devastated landscape, while tens of thousands more Japanese starved in a catastrophic retreat eastwards. They called the journey back to Burma the ` Road of Bones`, as friends & comrades committed suicide or dropped dead from hunger along the jungle paths. Fergal Keane has reported for the BBC from conflicts on every continent over the past 25 years, & he brings to this work of history not only rigorous scholarship but a raw understanding of the pitiless nature of war. It is a story filled with vivid characters: the millionaire`s son who refused a commission & was awarded a VC for his sacrifice in battle, the Roedean debutante who led a guerrilla band in the jungle, & the General who defied the orders of a hated superior in order to save the lives of his men. Based on original research in Japan, Britain & India, ` Road of Bones` is a story about extraordinary courage & the folly of imperial dreams. ...

Road signs have never attracted the interest that railway signs have, perhaps because they are so commonplace. There have been direction signs ever since man began to travel, & boundary signs too, have a long history. Warning signs, however, did not become necessary until cycling & motoring became established at the end of the nineteenth century. Since then the British government has sought to regulate all aspects of traffic signage & signs are often altered to keep abreast of developments, but neverthless signs from bygone days can still be observed along Britain`s highways today. ...

In 1928, A.M. Hamilton travelled to Iraqi Kurdistan, having been commissioned to build a road that would stretch from Northern Iraq, through the mountains & gorges of Kurdistan & on to the Iranian border. Now called the Hamilton Road, this was, even by today`s standards, a considerable feat of engineering & remains one of the most strategically important roads in the region. In this colourful & engaging account, Hamilton describes the four years he spent overcoming immense obstacles
- disease, ferocious brigands, warring tribes & bureaucratic officials
- to carve a path through some of the most beautiful but inhospitable landscape in the world. Road Through Kurdistan is an enthralling story, packed with adventure, of one man`s determination in the face of adversity: a classic of travel writing. It is also an invaluable portrayal of the Iraqi Kurds themselves, & of the Kurdish regions of Northern Iraq.

Ben Hatch is on the road again. Commissioned to write a guidebook about France (despite not speaking any French) he sets off with visions of relaxing chateaux & refined dining. Ten thousand miles later his family's been attacked by a donkey, had a run-in with a death-cult &, after a near drowning & a calamitous wedding experience involving a British spy, his own marriage is in jeopardy. A combination of obsessions about mosquitoes, French gravel & vegetable theme parks mean it's a bumpy ride as Ben takes a stand against tyrannical French pool attendants, finds himself running with the bulls in Pamplona & almost starring in a snuff movie after a near fatal decision to climb into a millionaire's Chevrolet Blazer. Funny & poignant, Road to Rouen asks important questions about life, marriage & whether it's ever acceptable to tape baguette to your children's legs to smuggle lunch into Disneyland Paris. ...
