From the award-winning author of If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things & Even the Dogs. Reservoir 13 tells the story of many lives haunted by one family`s loss.A GUARDIAN NOTABLE BOOK OF 2017 Midwinter in the early years of this century. A teenage girl on holiday has gone missing in the hills at the heart of Engl&. The villagers are called up to join the search, fanning out across the moors as the police set up roadblocks & a crowd of news reporters descends on their usually quiet home. Meanwhile, there is work that must still be done: cows milked, fences repaired, stone cut, pints poured, beds made, sermons written, a pantomime rehearsed. The search for the missing girl goes on, but so does everyday life. As it must. As the seasons unfold there are those who leave the village & those who are pulled back; those who come together or break apart. There are births & deaths; secrets kept & exposed; livelihoods made & lost; small kindnesses & unanticipated betrayals. Bats hang in the eaves of the church & herons stand sentry in the river; fieldfares flock in the hawthorn trees & badgers & foxes prowl deep in the woods
- mating & fighting, hunting & dying. An extraordinary novel of cumulative power & grace, Reservoir 13 explores the rhythms of the natural world & the repeated human gift for violence, unfolding over thirteen years as the aftershocks of a stranger`s tragedy refuse to subside.

The Reshaping of British Railways is a piece of railway history every dedicated enthusiast will want in their collection. Bradshaw`s Guide has given birth to a wave of nostalgia for our Victorian & Edwardian railway systems. The Reshaping of British Railways, another facsimile which will fascinate train buffs, is the document that decimated these systems forever. With the British Rail company`s failure, by the early 1960s, to stem the network`s huge annual losses, the government turned to Dr Richard Beeching. He was to save money by recommending the cutting of redundant routes & services. His two reports, The Reshaping of British Railways (1963) & The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes (1965), were published by the British Railways Board in 1965, & offer a fascinating snapshot of our nation`s railways. In the first part of this historic facsimile, Dr Beeching identifies the 2, 363 stations & 5, 000 miles (8, 000 km) of railway line for closure
- over 50% of all stations & 30% of route miles. The second part recommends a small number of major remaining routes for significant investment. Well documented nationwide protests resulted in the saving of some stations & lines, but the majority were closed as planned & Beeching`s name is to this day associated with the mass closure of railways & the loss of many local services in the period that followed. Now, for the first time, this iconic piece of railway history is available in its entirety, complete with the original tables & maps of routes deemed fit for closure.

John Manners, Marquis of Granby, famously led a cavalry charge during the Seven Years War in 1760, losing both hat & wig. A commander of skill & courage, he was cherished by his men & lauded by the British public as an authentic military hero. Granby predeceased his father, the 3rd Duke of Rutl&, & never inherited his title, but left two sons whose contrasting fortunes & tragically short lives are the subject of this meticulously researched & richly illustrated book.
