In June 1994, a dangerous bomb storm caught dozens of cruising sailors by surprise as they voyaged north from New Zeal&. This is the true story of how nine yachts struggled to survive the hurricane-like conditions. Boats were battered by fierce winds & capsized by seas towering well over 50 feet high. Masts collapsed, rudders broke, & sailors lost steering control when they needed it most. This book details the story of the heroic men & women on the yachts, in the planes, on the ships, & on land who took part in this sea drama
- find out what really happened & what it was like out there. This is both a shock course in survival for bluewater voyagers & a riveting human drama for sailors & nonsailors alike. If you're cruising now, clear a space on your boat's bookshelf: the lessons here can help pull you through even a nightmare of a storm.
- SAIL... .a dramatic story of life, death, & the epic struggle of man against the forces of nature.. .gripping.. .compelling.. .a story as spellbinding & harrowing as any novel.
- Multihulls... .gripping reading... Farrington's account of the skippers' attempts to secure their boats against the storm will be invaluable to blue water sailors... You don't have to know much about sailing to find this book fascinating. It is a story of human endeavour, endurance, courage, & frailty, & the accounts of the rescues are particularly exciting.
- The Evening Post (Wellington, New Zealand).[a]book you will want to read from cover to cover.
- Boating NZ. Tony Farrington tells a remarkable rescue story... If you enjoy the water, I suggest that you read this volume.
- The Ensign. The human spirit...is the best survival tool there is. That is one of the lessons of this valuable, enthralling book.
- John Rousmaniere, author of Fastnet, Force 10.

Jerry Grayson is an ordinary man who chose an extraordinary career. At age 17 he became the youngest helicopter pilot to ever serve in the Royal Navy. By age 25 he was the most decorated peacetime naval pilot in history. For the Navy`s Search & Rescue pilots, getting to work is both an adventure & an ordeal. Whether rescuing a wounded fighter pilot who has ditched in the sea, saving desperate survivors from a sinking ship, or picking up a grievously ill crewman from the deck of a nuclear-armed submarine that is playing a cat-&-mouse game with the Soviet navy, Jerry Grayson has lived a life of unparalleled excitement & adventure. His finest hour came during the infamous Fastnet Yacht Race of 1979 in which 25 yachts were lost. When a catastrophic storm enveloped the competitors he & his crew pushed their Wessex helicopter to its absolute limits & put their own lives at risk, flying into hurricane-force winds to winch shipwrecked sailors from heaving tempestuous seas. An investiture at Buckingham Palace with Her Majesty the Queen was the result. Being a Rescue Pilot is a fast-paced career because there is no choice. Lives are at stake & pilots must move & think fast. Jerry Grayson`s inside view of this heroic service is as inspirational as it is celebratory. Excitingly told, frequently funny but also very poignant, Jerry`s story is not an account of just one man`s deeds, it is a salute to all the men & women he worked with who were able to turn tragedies into triumphs.

From the award-winning author of If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things & Even the Dogs. Reservoir 13 tells the story of many lives haunted by one family`s loss.A GUARDIAN NOTABLE BOOK OF 2017 Midwinter in the early years of this century. A teenage girl on holiday has gone missing in the hills at the heart of Engl&. The villagers are called up to join the search, fanning out across the moors as the police set up roadblocks & a crowd of news reporters descends on their usually quiet home. Meanwhile, there is work that must still be done: cows milked, fences repaired, stone cut, pints poured, beds made, sermons written, a pantomime rehearsed. The search for the missing girl goes on, but so does everyday life. As it must. As the seasons unfold there are those who leave the village & those who are pulled back; those who come together or break apart. There are births & deaths; secrets kept & exposed; livelihoods made & lost; small kindnesses & unanticipated betrayals. Bats hang in the eaves of the church & herons stand sentry in the river; fieldfares flock in the hawthorn trees & badgers & foxes prowl deep in the woods
- mating & fighting, hunting & dying. An extraordinary novel of cumulative power & grace, Reservoir 13 explores the rhythms of the natural world & the repeated human gift for violence, unfolding over thirteen years as the aftershocks of a stranger`s tragedy refuse to subside.

The Reshaping of British Railways is a piece of railway history every dedicated enthusiast will want in their collection. Bradshaw`s Guide has given birth to a wave of nostalgia for our Victorian & Edwardian railway systems. The Reshaping of British Railways, another facsimile which will fascinate train buffs, is the document that decimated these systems forever. With the British Rail company`s failure, by the early 1960s, to stem the network`s huge annual losses, the government turned to Dr Richard Beeching. He was to save money by recommending the cutting of redundant routes & services. His two reports, The Reshaping of British Railways (1963) & The Development of the Major Railway Trunk Routes (1965), were published by the British Railways Board in 1965, & offer a fascinating snapshot of our nation`s railways. In the first part of this historic facsimile, Dr Beeching identifies the 2, 363 stations & 5, 000 miles (8, 000 km) of railway line for closure
- over 50% of all stations & 30% of route miles. The second part recommends a small number of major remaining routes for significant investment. Well documented nationwide protests resulted in the saving of some stations & lines, but the majority were closed as planned & Beeching`s name is to this day associated with the mass closure of railways & the loss of many local services in the period that followed. Now, for the first time, this iconic piece of railway history is available in its entirety, complete with the original tables & maps of routes deemed fit for closure.
