Why are we speaking English? Replenishing the Earth gives a new answer to that question, uncovering a `settler revolution` that took place from the early nineteenth century that led to the explosive settlement of the American West & its forgotten twin, the British West, comprising the settler dominions of Canada, Australia, New Zeal&, & South Africa. Between 1780 & 1930 the number of English-speakers rocketed from 12 million in 1780 to 200 million, & their wealth & power grew to match. Their secret was not racial, or cultural, or institutional superiority but a resonant intersection of historical changes, including the sudden rise of mass transfer across oceans & mountains, a revolutionary upward shift in attitudes to emigration, the emergence of a settler `boom mentality`, & a late flowering of non-industrial technologies -wind, water, wood, & work animals
- especially on settler frontiers. This revolution combined with the Industrial Revolution to transform settlement into something explosive
- capable of creating great cities like Chicago & Melbourne & large socio-economies in a single generation. When the great settler booms busted, as they always did, a second pattern set in. Links between the Anglo-wests & their metropolises, London & New York, actually tightened as rising tides of staple products flowed one way & ideas the other. This `re-colonization` re-integrated Greater America & Greater Britain, bulking them out to become the superpowers of their day. The ` Settler Revolution` was not exclusive to the Anglophone countries
- Argentina, Siberia, & Manchuria also experienced it. But it was the Anglophone settlers who managed to integrate frontier & metropolis most successfully, & it was this that gave them the impetus & the material power to provide the world`s leading super-powers for the last 200 years. This book will reshape understandings of American, British, & British dominion histories in the long 19th century. It is a story that has such crucial implications for the histories of settler societies, the homelands that spawned them, & the indigenous peoples who resisted them, that their full histories cannot be written without it.

The 1:50 000 topographic map gives a more general picture of the ground features than a basic map. It shows settlements, houses, roads, cultivated areas, waterways, cutting areas, mires, rock exposures, & relief. One map sheet covers an area of 30 x 40 km & one centimetre corresponds to 500 metres on the ground. The 1:50, 000 topographic map is also an ideal complement to nautical charts as it provides useful information about the land areas adjacent to waterways. For example, all Finnish sea areas are covered by 1:50 000 topographic map sheets. ...

` Reporter is just wonderful. Truly a great life, & what shines out of the book, amid the low cunning & tireless legwork, is Hersh`s warmth & humanity. Essential reading for every journalist & aspiring journalist the world over` John le Carre In the early 1950s, teenage Seymour Hersh was finishing high school & university
- while running the family`s struggling dry cleaning store in a Southside Chicago ghetto. Today, he is one of America`s premier investigative journalists, whose fearless reporting has earned him fame, front-page bylines in virtually every newspaper in the world, a staggering collection of awards, & no small amount of controversy. Reporter is the story of how he did it. It is a story of slog, ingenuity & defiance, following Hersh from his first job as a crime reporter for the Chicago City News Bureau, through his Pulitzer Prize-winning freelance investigative exposes, to the heights of his reporting for The New York Times & the New Yorker. It is a tale of night-time encounters with great Civil Rights leaders, unauthorised meetings with Pentagon officials, raucous dinners with Canadian soldiers in Hanoi, tense phone calls with Secretaries of State, desperate to save face; of exposing myriad military & political wrongdoing, from My Lai to Watergate to Abu Ghraib, & the cynical cover-ups that followed in Washington & New York. Here too are unforgettable encounters with some of the most formidable figures from recent decades, from Saul Bellow to Martin Luther King Jr., from Henry Kissinger to Bashar al-Assad. Ultimately, in unfurling Seymour Hersh`s life & career, Reporter tells a story of twentieth-century America, in all its excitement & darkness.

Replacing Your Boat`s Electrical System

The third in a series of highly practical, hands on, step-by-step photographic manuals, Replacing Your Boat`s Electrical System fills a gap in the market for the DIY boat builder and repairer. It is a subject covered only in piecemeal fashion by the yachting press, which, like general boat repair manuals, can`t go into the level of detail Mike Westin does in this superlative volume. This is a visual, hand-holding guide, dwelling on the details as it explains each procedure rather than focusing on the theory (which is relegated to an appendix, for those who wish to go further).
