The traditional dividing point between the two sierras is Puerto de Competa, which we visit in Walk 36. The joys of these mountains are manifold, including bulbous karstic domes & vertiginous pinnacles, dramatic cliffs draped with ragged crags & grand ridges dominating the glittering blue sea; there are uplands patched with ancient pastures & dotted with the ruins of remote cortijos (farmhouses), there are terraces stippled with olive & almond trees, hillsides swaddled in a buttery blanket of yellow-flowering shrubs, valleys flanked by shady forests of conifer & cork oak, & fabulous ravines twisting between towering chicanes (known as cahorros) & tipping over spectacular waterfalls into deep plunge pools, all accessible within 15 minutes of the coast. THE WHITE VILLAGES The Pueblos Blancos of Andalusia with their whitewashed walls & red-tiled roofs are justly famous & the Axarquia does not disappoint in this respect. La Gomera is the ultimate get-away-from-it-all island: easy-going, unspoilt, friendly, isolated from the hustle & bustle of modern living, & so laid back it`s virtually supine
- even the volcanoes have been dormant for millions of years. The walks, however, are a bit more energetic. For the new 4th edition of Walk! La Gomera Charles Davis has teamed up with Jan Kostura. Jan brings his wide experience & passion for the Canaries, checking, re-walking & revising existing routes, & adding a couple of his own adventures, including a new Top Three Gomeran walk. Two routes have been dropped as having become too dangerous, but the good news is that many of the more harum-scarum walks have been enhanced through path clearing & the addition of railings to the vertiginous stretches. Other good news is that the devastating forest fires of 2012 have proved not nearly as damaging as we feared, leaving most of our itineraries unscathed.
