Cornubia, Devonia, Somersetus, Dorcestria, .. ., an original antique map by J Jansson, published in Amsterdam, 1628. A copperplate engraving, coloured. Map size 20 x 15 cm, overall mounted size 35.5 x 30 cm. An attractive map of the south-western English counties & South Wales. In 1607 Jodocus Hondius published a reduced size version of Gerard Mercator's renowned Atlas, itself suitably titled Atlas Minor. The maps were copied from those of the great cartographer Mercator of around 1580-90 or were reductions of Hondius' own maps of 1606. The popularity of the smaller format & reduced price, compared with the folio issues of Atlas, was reflected in the many subsequent editions & in the variety of derivative publications in similar style. Almost 20 years later the map & atlas publisher Joannes Janssonius commissioned a new set of copperplates to be engraved by Pieter Van Den Keere (often signed Kaerius) & Abraham Goos, two of the most proficient & experienced Dutch map engravers of the period. These maps were elegantly designed with decorative title cartouches, & were finely engraved & surprisingly detailed, elements particularly noticeable in their early printings, as here. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Me 194. Antique maps from various original publishers are presented on the Stanford ...

Wall map of South West England & South Wales at 1:316, 800 (5 miles to 1 inch) from Geographers' A-Z Map Company for traditionalists who prefer their maps drawn at scales corresponding to the imperial measurements of miles to inches, with colourful presentation of topography & hill heights in feet. Presentation of the topography varies slightly, from bold altitude colouring in older editions to slightly gentler colours enhanced by relief shading on more recent maps, both very effectively showing the more hilly or mountainous parts of the country. All maps have spot heights shown in feet. The colouring of the road network clearly distinguishes between primary routes & other A roads for route planning, with B roads also easy to follow on all backgrounds. Smaller country roads are less clear to see, with the publishers recommending their alternative series for more detailed local coverage. Railway lines are included & shown with stations, but at times difficult to find. British national grid lines are overprinted on the cartography & a separate booklet is supplied containing the index to cities, towns, villages, hamlets & locations. IMPORTANT
- PLEASE NOTE: many place names & all additional tourist information is in very small lettering, requiring good eyesight or a magnifying glass.
