Ground Up has joined forces in 2010 with Peak District climbing stalwart, Mark ` Zippy` Pretty to produce a rock climbing supplement: ” Recent Developments on Peak Limestone”. Activity on the Peak limestone crags continues apace, with numerous new routes being produced by a small but dedicated cohort of activists. There has also been much re-equipping work & rationalising of neglected routes in recent times. This supplement documents these changes & gives details of the new routes with a deliberate emphasis on clip-ups of F7a & above. It follows in the tradition of previous ” Recent Developments” supplements dating back to the classic Steve Bancroft supplement published in 1977. It

Includes::
full colour topos showing the new lines on the intensely developed Raven Tor. There are also a couple of graded lists
- an expression of the current consensus on relative standards of difficulty in the Peak sport climbing scene. Jon Fullwood has written a very useful bolting best practice article & a number of excellent action photographs have been supplied by top climbing photographers: Keith Sharples, Ian Parnell, Stu Littlefair & Adam Long.

Summer 2011 sees the publication of a new guidebook to the trade & sport routes of the many & varied cliffs scattered across Peak Limestone. This book takes the coverage in the Peak section of the well-received Northern Limestone Rockfax from 2004 (the Yorkshire section will be published later) & expands this with better photographic coverage, more cliffs & more routes. ” Rockfax Peak Limestone” is the latest book to this popular area & follows on from the previous Rockfax limestone guides which have been the only real source of information for many of the crags for nearly 20 years. It will be the only single book to cover limestone for the foreseeable future. ...

Peak Rock is a celebration of significant developments at the cutting edge of rock climbing in the Peak District, from the day that James W Puttrell first set foot on rock at Wharncliffe in the late nineteenth century, through to modern day ascents on the area`s gritstone & limestone crags. Meticulously researched & written by a team of local authors, this is the story of the sharp end of Peak District climbing as told through the words of many of the Peak`s
- & the world`s
- top climbers, including: James W Puttrell, Jack Longl&, Joe Brown, Don Whillans, Ed Drummond, Tom Proctor, John Allen, Ron Fawcett, Andy Pollitt, Jerry Moffatt, Johnny Dawes, Ben Moon, Miles Gibson, Pete Whittaker, Steve Mc Clure, Ryan Pasquill & many more. The late Giles Barker first started work on Peak Rock
- then titled Peak Performance
- in the early 1980s, before progress was halted by his premature death in 1992. It was almost twenty years before Phil Kelly picked up where Giles left off, pulling together Giles` original research & interviews, which were stored at the Mountain Heritage Trust. Phil enlisted Graham Hoey to work on the book, updating the manuscript with their own interview material & other primary source information, writing a number of missing chapters & also adding a number of chapters, including the significant developments of the 1980s, 1990s & 2000s. Phil & Graham brought in a team of experienced Peak District climbers drawing on their knowledge of specific developments
- trad climbing, sport climbing, bouldering, gritstone, limestone
- & worked with them to develop individual chapters. This resulting book on the history of Peak District climbing is the most comprehensive to be published since Eric Byne & Geoff Sutton`s High Peak in 1966.

Dr Ernest Cromwell Peake was the first medical missionary to arrive in the region of Hankow, inland China, & he had to overcome significant obstacles in the building & establishment of his hospital, as well as the intense hostility of the Chinese towards foreigners & towards Western medical practice. He succeeded in his endeavour, & during his time in China he also married & had two children, one of whom was the writer & artist Mervyn Peake, whose first 12 years were spent there. Dr Peake wrote his memories of this period many years later when he had returned with his family to Engl&, recording his arrival, his impressions of the Chinese, & the story of his establishment of a hospital. He also witnessed the historic events of the Chinese Revolution in 1911, the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty & the Boxer Rebellion. The memoirs provide a fascinating account of a Westerner in China at the turn of the last century. Of equal interest is the influence of the China years on Dr Peake`s son Mervyn, who was born in China & went on to become one of the most talented British writers & artists of the twentieth century. An introduction by the renowned biographer Hilary Spurling explores the connection between Mervyn Peake`s years in China & his Gormenghast novels. ...

145 days. 17 countries. 1 road trip. 40, 000 km traveled. Many people met. Peaks of Europe is not a traditional landscape photography book. It`s the result of a 5-month adventure across 17 countries told through the lens of a European travel photographer who took 29 years to finally explore the continent on which in he was born. The book has been designed for a specific purpose: telling the story of a 5-month road trip & what it takes to be living out of a car for several months, with all the good & bad moments. For this project, Johan Lolos wasn`t just documenting the landscapes. This book features a series of photos with a focus on the storytelling as much as the imagery. At the end, the people he met were what he remembered most. More than 250 pages featuring 200+ photos, many of which are previously unpublished, take you through three major regions of Europe: the North, the Balkans & the Alps. From the Arctic island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, to Greece`s largest island where Lolos walked in the footsteps of his ancestors in Crete, Peaks of Europe showcases the large variety of landscapes that makes Europe so diverse & unique. As a travel photographer with a fascination for human interactions, Lolos has also tried to portray different cultures through all the people he met during his journey. ...
