L`air de Paris. This is the vivid history of the capital of love & photography. A city built on two millennia of history, Paris is entering the third century of its love story with photography. It was on the banks of the Seine that Niepce & Daguerre officially gave birth to this new art that has flourished ever since, developing a distinctive language & becoming a vital tool of knowledge. ” Paris, Portrait of a City” recounts the history of the city in photographs ranging from Daguerre`s early incunabula to the most recent images
- a span of over a century & a half of transformations. This book brings together the past & the present, the monumental & the everyday, objects & people. Images captured by the most illustrious photographers
- Daguerre, Marville, Atget, Lartigue, Brassai, Kertesz, Ronis, Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson & many more
- but also by many unknown photographers, attempt to bottle just a little of that ” Parisian air, ” something of that particular poetry given out by the stones & inhabitants of a constantly changing city that has inspired untold numbers of writers & artists over the ages.

A former Parisian living in New York, French Vogue correspondent Carole Sabas was often approached by visiting friends & colleagues looking for recommendations on where to get a good blow dry, a quick eyebrow shaping, or a great place to meet friends for drinks after a long day at a fashion show. So many people asked, in fact, that she produced a small guide that she gave out for free & which was filled with all sorts of useful advice. Sabas has now expanded this guide to include sections titled ” Eating & Drinking, ” ” Beauty, ” ” Health, ” ” Fashion & Decoration, ” ” Shopping, ” ” Art” & an eclectic selection of odds & ends called ” Might Be Useful One Day.” Each entry is written with a light touch & in a friendly tone, &

Medium size, cloth-backed version of the Plan de Paris et ses Fortifications originally published by Auguste Logerot around 1844. The plan shows the city within its old outer walls (roughly corresponding to the present day Boulevard Périphérique), highlighted on the map together with the older inner walls & gates in colour. Coverage extends out to St Denis, Bois de Vincennes & beyond the western bend in the Seine to show a number of military forts, also marked in colour. This reproduction was taken from what used to be called a “cloth-dissected” map, made when the map itself was cut into sections & each section then individually pasted onto an overall cloth backing for the whole map. In this version the whole map is backed onto cloth in one piece but the gaps between the sections have been reproduced in the printing to preserve the style & the feeling of the original. Each individual cloth-backed map is sold folded in a colourful case covered with a unique design marbled paper – no two cases are identical.PLEASE NOTE: this title is also available in a smaller size.
