Lofgren takes us on a tour of the Western holiday world & shows how two centuries of `learning to be a tourist` have shaped our own ways of vacationing. We see how fashions in destinations have changed through the years, with popular images (written, drawn, painted, & later photographed) teaching the tourist what to look for & how to experience it. Travelers present & future will never see their cruises, treks, ecotours, round-the-world journeys, or trips to the vacation cottage or condo in quite the same way again. All our l&-, sea-, & mindscapes will be the richer for Lofgren`s insights. ...

Tim Binding lived in Ilkley, Yorkshire until he was seven, & the place shaped his imagination & has haunted him ever since, especially the death by drowning of Michael Airey, his childhood friend. On Ilkley Moor is an imaginative history of a town: a series of explorations, partly factual, partly intuitive & partly personal. It is the tale of Victorian optimism
- of faith in hydropathy, in manufacturing, in the railways. It is an examination of Ilkley's place on the faultline between the two great forces which have informed English life & culture: its rural heritage & the industrial revolution. It is a book about the north, about industry, commerce & medicine &, above it all, it is one small story of Engl&, of going back, of the fifties & the lost dreams of that era
- not a travel book, but a return home to the place that made the writer what he is. ' An evocative, resonant & sometimes disturbing book' Philip Hoare, Independent ' Fascinating...a journey into the heart of Yorkshire gone by, this is a powerful book, constantly informed by the hulking moor above the town' Conde Nast Traveller

Wilbur Smith has lived an incredible life of adventure, & now he shares the extraordinary true stories that have inspired his fiction. I`ve been writing novels for over fifty years. I was lucky enough to miss the big wars & not get shot, but lucky enough to grow up among the heroes who had served in them & learn from their example. I have lucked into things continuously. I have done things which have seemed appalling at the time, disastrous even, but out of them has come another story or a deeper knowledge of human character & the ability to express myself better on paper & write books which people enjoy reading. Along the way, I have lived a life that I could never have imagined. I have been privileged to meet people from all corners of the globe, I have been wherever my heart has desired & in the process my books have taken readers to many, many places. I always say I`ve started wars, I`ve burned down cities & I`ve killed hundreds of thousands of people
- but only in my imagination! From being attacked by lions to close encounters with deadly reef sharks, from getting lost in the African bush without water to crawling the precarious tunnels of gold mines, from marlin fishing with Lee Marvin to near death from crash-landing a Cessna aeroplane, from brutal school days to redemption through writing & falling in love, Wilbur Smith tells us the intimate stories of his life that have been the raw material for his fiction. Always candid, sometimes hilarious & never less than thrillingly entertaining, On Leopard Rockis testament to a writer whose life is as rich & eventful as his novels are compellingly unputdownable.

What are the greatest regrets of the dying? At her patients` bedside, witnessing their final moments, this is what Kerry Egan discovers. How do the dying seek to making meaning of their lives, the people & moments that have shaped them; & what are those things above all else that they wish they could have done differently? From stories of families torn apart by war, to making peace with the shame of a long-hidden secret, these are the tales of people who wished they had loved their partners more, cherished their children more, forgiven feuds & betrayals, & those who simply wish they had danced more. This isn`t a book about dying
- it`s a book about living. Each of Egan`s patients taught her something: how to find courage in the face of fear, how to make amends whilst you still can, how to see that the world is not just black & white, & that there can be beauty in the grey. In this deeply moving & illuminating book, Kerry captures the fragility of the human experience, imparting the poignant & profound lessons from the dying, on how to live a life without regrets.

In On Love, we see Charles Bukowski reckoning with the complications of love & desire. Alternating between the tough & the tender, the romantic & the gritty, Bukowski exposes the myriad faces of love in the poems collected here
- its selfishness & its narcissism, its randomness, its mystery & its misery, &, ultimately, its true joyfulness, endurance & redemptive power. Whether writing about his daughter, his lover, or his work, Bukowski is fiercely honest & reflective, using love as a prism to look at the world & to view his own vulnerable place in it.

On Leave

A lost classic lays bare the darkest moment of France`s post-war history. First published in Paris in 1957, as France`s engagement in Algeria became ever more bloody, On Leave received a handful of reviews and soon disappeared from view. Through David Bellos` translation, this lost classic has been rediscovered. Spare, forceful and moving, the novel describes a week in the lives of a sergeant, a corporal and a private, home on leave in Paris. Full of sympathy and feeling, informed by the many hours Daniel Anselme spent talking to conscripts in Paris, On Leave is a timeless evocation of what the history books can never record: the shame and terror felt by men returning home from war. Daniel Anselme was born Daniel Rabinovitch in 1927, and adopted the name Anselme while in the
French Resistance with his father. He traveled widely as a journalist, and was known as a raconteur and habitue of Left Bank cafes. He published his first novel On Leave in 1957, a second, Relations, in 1964, and a semi-autobiographical account of his wartime experiences called The Secret Companion in 1984. He was also one of the leaders of Solidarity Radio in Paris. He died in 1989.David Bellos is Director of the Program in Translation and Intercultural Communication at Princeton University, where he is also Professor of French and Comparative Literature. He has won many awards for his translations of Georges Perec, Ismail Kadare and others, including the Man Booker Translator Award, and received the Prix Goncourt de la biographie for his book on Perec.
