The growth of the ocean liner was driven not only by political & social changes, & developments in marine technology & design but also by increased competition as new companies were established to meet the demands of travellers. Most liner books tend to be focussed on the transatlantic routes whereas the main aim of this book is to tell the story of the whole global development of the ocean liner. The means that not only are the well-known vessels featured but also many lesser known routes & ships. The story starts in the ninetheenth century with the greatest migration ever seen. Communications around the world were also rapidly improving with the introduction of railways, the opening of the Suez Canal, a universal postal system &, most importantly, the laying of undersea telegraph cables. Tourism as we know it took off in the 1870s & 1880s. This was also a time of colonial expansion which would see Britain & other countries establishing empires around the world. To meet the dem&, passenger ships became increasingly important with great advances being made not only in ship design but also marine engineering. These technological innovations soon included the introduction not only of the turbine but also diesel engines. Ocean liners also became statements of national pride & artistic achievements. The story concludes in the 1960s when, despite increasing numbers of travellers choosing to fly rather than travel by sea, a final flurry of liners were built, many of which had shorter lives than planned. The unique text is supported by over 250 carefully chosen photographs, many of which have never been seen before. A truly unique & evocative book for merchant ship enthusiasts & historians. ...

The great age of ocean travel has long since passed, but ocean liners remain one of the most powerful & admired symbols of modernity. No form of transport was as romantic, remarkable, or contested, & ocean liner design became a matter of national prestige as well as an arena in which the larger dynamic s of global competition were played out. This beautifully illustrated book considers over a century of liner design: from the striking graphics created to promote liners to the triumphs of engineering, & from luxurious interiors to on board fashion & activities. Ocean Liners explores the design of Victorian & Art Deco `floating palaces`, sleek post-war liners as well as these ships` impact on avant-garde artists & architects such as Le Corbusier. ...

The stories start when a boy who loves photography listens to a talk by National Geographic explorers Sylvia Earle & Bob Ballard. He says, This will be my life`s work
- to tell the story of the ocean. The boy, named Brian Skerry, does just that through more than 20 articles for ”NG magazine”. Twenty years later, his book, ” Ocean Soul”, will be the ultimately stunning photographic portrait of the ocean as a place of mystery, as a place in trouble, & as a place of hope that will rebound with amazing ease as boundaries are set & observed. This lavish exhibition of imagery with compelling stories brings an intimate & unforgettable portrait of all ocean environments & of four key creatures who are poster children for the health of the world`s oceans (the shark, the right whale, the leatherback turtle, & the harp seal)
- & ultimately our own health. Within each chapter there will be a section profiling one of the four featured sea creatures. In his lyrical pictures as well as words, Brian Skerry backs into the science of our failing environment by compelling us to love it.

Oceans make up most of the surface of our blue planet. They may form just a sliver on the outside of the Earth, but they are very important, not only in hosting life, including the fish & other animals on which many humans depend, but in terms of their role in the Earth system, in regulating climate, & cycling nutrients. As climate change, pollution, & over-exploitation by humans puts this precious resource at risk, it is more important than ever that we understand & appreciate the nature & history of oceans. There is much we still do not know about the story of the Earth`s oceans, & we are only just beginning to find indications of oceans on other planets. In this book, geologists Jan Zalasiewicz & Mark Williams consider the deep history of oceans, how & when they may have formed on the young Earth
- topics of intense current research
- how they became salty, & how they evolved through Earth history. We learn how oceans have formed & disappeared over millions of years, how the sea nurtured life, & what may become of our oceans in the future. We encounter some of the scientists & adventurers whose efforts led to our present understanding of oceans. And we look at clues to possible seas that may once have covered parts of Mars & Venus, that may still exist, below the surface, on moons such as Europa & Callisto, & the possibility of watery planets in other star systems.
