Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

O Pioneers is a Pulitzer-prize winning novel by American literary legend Willa Cather. It is a tale of murder, love & money, as people struggle to carve out a life in the wilderness while battling ever-duplicitous human nature. Alexandra Bergson`s father, John, is dying. He entrusts his farmstead on a desolate stretch of plain to her rather than to her brothers. Faced with the rigours of frontier living, droughts & penury, Alexandra only becomes more determined to carry on her father`s legacy & battles through remortgaging the farm & adopting new techniques. Fast forward sixteen years, her hard work has paid off, her brothers Lou & Oscar have both created prosperous farms & under Alexandra`s management the original farm has thrived. When childhood friend Carl Linstrum returns from travelling though it appears that romance is on the cards & Lou & Oscar drive him out of town, fearing that their sister`s marriage would disinherit their own children. The community begins to unravel as jealousy spills out into murder. Although born in Virginia, Willa Cather`s family moved to Nebraska & her writing reflects her upbringing in the prairie lands steeped in history. Prairie living, & its accompanying literature, was viewed as embodying the quintessential American experience. The power of the land itself, the resilience of its inhabitants & the flow of history over the land all tied in with Romantic notions embedded in the nature of pioneer expansion. ...

` For the first time, perhaps, since that land emerged from the waters of geologic ages, a human face was set toward it with love & yearning. It seemed beautiful to her, rich & strong & glorious.` Willa Cather`s second novel, O Pioneers! (1913) tells the story of Alexandra Bergson & her determination to save her immigrant family`s Nebraska farm. Clear-headed & fiercely independent, Alexandra`s passionate faith in the prairie makes her a wealthy landowner. By placing a strong, self-reliant woman at the centre of her tale, Cather gives the quintessentially American novel of the soil a radical cast. Yet, although influenced by the democratic utopianism of Walt Whitman & the serene regionalism of Sarah Orne Jewett, O Pioneers! is more than merely an elegy for the lost glories of America`s pioneer past. In its rage for order & efficiency, the novel testifies to the cultural politics of the Progressive Era, the period of massive social & economic transformations that helped to modernize the United States in the years between the Civil War & World War.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World`s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford`s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, & much more. ...
