Topographic survey of Greenland at 1:250, 000 from Sagamaps in a series which along the western coast extends past Thule to the latitude of 78°, plus covers selected areas of the east coast including the Stauning Alps. Relief is shown by contours at 50m intervals, augmented by frequent spot heights. Main peaks are named, along with many other physical features, e.g. bays & islands. Glaciers, moraine & low-lying coastal plains are also indicated & contours continue for a limited extent into the icecap region. The sagas of the ancient Narts are to the Caucasus what Greek mythology is to Western civilization. This book presents, for the first time in the West, a wide selection of these fascinating myths preserved among four related peoples whose ancient cultures today survive by a thread. Despite a tragic history, the Circassians, Abazas, Abkhaz, & Ubykhs have retained the Nart sagas as a living tradition. The memory of their elaborate warrior culture, so richly expressed by these tales, helped them resist Tsarist imperialism in the nineteenth century, Stalinist suppression in the twentieth, & has bolstered their ongoing cultural journey into the post-Soviet future. Because these peoples were at the crossroads of Eurasia for millennia, their myths exhibit striking parallels with the lore of ancient India, classical Greece, & pagan Scandinavia. The Nart sagas may also have formed a crucial component of the Arthurian cycle. Notes after each tale reveal these parallels; an appendix offers extensive linguistic commentary. The maps have contours at 5 metre intervals, plus relief shading & graphics for rocky outcrops & boulders. Further graphics and/or colouring show different types of land use or vegetation (forests, arable l&, orchards, marshes, peat bogs, etc). An unusual feature of this survey is the colouring indicating buildings below or above two storeys high & “leisure/holiday homes”.
