The official route map for the 191-mile (307km) eastern part of National Cycle Network Route 2 along England`s South Coast from Brockenhurst to Dover. Starting from Brockenhurst, deep in the New Forest, this eastern part of the South Coast Route (NCN2) is almost entirely flat. Although there are no big hills to tackle, that means there hardly any down-hills to relax on either, so make sure you take plenty of breaks on this spectacular stretch of England`s south coast. Fortunately, there is plenty to see & do along the way, & four ferries
- across Southampton Water, the River Hamble, from Gosport to Portsmouth, & onto Hayling Island
- will also help take some of the strain. Pause & take in the historic naval dockyards of Southampton & Portsmouth, marvel at the mosaic remains of Fishbourne Roman Palace, & enjoy beautiful Chichester with its stunning cathedral. From there the route heads coastwards where you ride along the promenades of Bognor, Littlehampton, Worthing, Hove & Brighton with all their Georgian & Victorian splendour. After Seaton, you head inland to avoid scaling the dizzy heights Beachy Head
- the south-eastern tip of the South Downs, Britain`s newest National Park. Once you re-join the coast you ride through more quintessential English seaside towns including Eastbourne, Bexhill & Hastings. There the ancient region of ` Cinque Ports` begins as does the big-skied, sparsely populated wetland area of Romney Marsh. Out of Folkestone you tackle the only real climb of the route over the Kent Downs, before being instantly rewarded with a view of Dover, the end of your ride.

The official route map for the 136-mile (219km) western part of National Cycle Network Route 2 along England`s South Coast from Dawlish to Brockenhurst. This western part of NCN2 is simply a stunning ride. It takes in some of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Engl&, going through two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (East Devon & Dorset & passing close to two others (Blackdown Hills & Cranborne Chase) before finishing in a National Park (The New Forest). Starting in the Victorian seaside town of Dawlish
- currently the western terminus of NCN2
- it follows the Exe Estuary Trail which runs up & down opposite banks of the estuary, a site of international importance for wading birds. Before swapping sides at Countess Wear, you could continue your ride up the River Exe & visit the historic cathedral city of Exeter with its numerous attractions, which is just a short detour away via NCN34. The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site runs all the way from Exmouth to Studland & forms the backbone of this ride. Rolling Devon hills gradually turn into the chalk downland of Dorset which affords wonderful views of the sweeping Lyme Bay far below. If you have time, the harbour town of Lyme Regis is well worth a short diversion off NCN2, as is Weymouth with its mix of cool-but-quaint harbour area & traditional seaside holiday fare. Maiden Castle looms near Dorchester, & visits to nearby Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door are a must. From the heathland & ridges of the Isle of Purbeck you cross Studland & Poole Harbour. Gawp at some of the most expensive real estate in the UK at Sandbanks before negotiating seven miles of Bournemouth seafront, then return to tranquility enjoying a pleasant forested end to your ride at Brockenhurst.
