The maps have contours at 5 metre intervals, plus relief shading & graphics for rocky outcrops & boulders. An unusual feature of this survey is the colouring indicating buildings below or above two storeys high & “leisure/holiday homes”. South Bank & Grangetown North in 1927 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. The map is dominated by steel & iron works. The LNER railway runs west-east across the map & on its south side are Cleveland Iron Works, Cleveland Steel Works & the disused Clay Lane Iron Works, showing full track layout of sidings, travelling cranes, blast furnaces & other detail. On the north side are South Bank Iron Works, several Slag Works, disused salt works, a Slag Reduction Works, Eston Sheet & Galvanizing Works, & River Tees Dockyard with dry docks. Grangetown station & the east end of South Bank station are included. Much of the town of South Bank is on at bottom left of the map, with closely packed terraces, Normanby Road, Nelson Street, St John`s church, King George`s Square, etc. The northern part of Grangetown is included on the bottom right with Bessemer Street, Market Square, Literary Institute, Cleveland House; coverage extends south to Bolckow Road & St Matthew`s church. On the reverse is a 1905 directory for South Bank & Grangetown. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25” OS Series: Selected towns in Great Britain & Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th & early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping & reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4, 340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes & many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
