Pirineu Occidental, the western part of the Catalan Pyrenees, at 1:100, 000 in the topographic survey of Catalonia published by the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya, with very detailed coverage of a large area & an excellent representation of the region’s topography. Maps in this series have relief presented by contours at 40m intervals, enhanced by additional hill-shading & spot heights; additional colouring shows different types of vegetation & boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. Road network, graded into six types, prominently shows road numbers. Local tracks & paths are included & an overprint highlights long-distance footpaths, including the GR11. Symbols indicate various places of interest including youth hostels & mountain refuges, historical & cultural sites, recreational areas, etc. Four different types of interesting locations are highlighted, indicating picturesque towns or villages, individual isolated building or monuments, natural sites, & hydrographic features such as waterfalls. In the Pyrenees road & topographic information continues across the border in France, but the overprint for the GR routes & highlighting of places of interest is limited to the Spanish side. Each title also has a small administrative map of the region & a list of administrative units. The maps have a 10-km UTM grid, with latitude & longitude stated for the sheet corners. The plans name all the individual streets & indicate all the main landmarks & public buildings. All public transport facilities are shown: buses, trams, underground & overland rail lines. One way streets & car parks are indicated. Plans of larger cities include an enlargement for the city centre. The plans also show the administrative & postal divisions & have an extensive street index which, where appropriate, shows individual postal codes for each street. Contours are at 25m intervals & colouring/symbols indicate different types of terrain & vegetation. Some of the maps may contain small blank spaces representing as yet unmapped areas. Each sheet covers 30’ latitude by 30’ longitude. The maps have a 1km UTM grid & margin ticks for latitude & longitude at intervals of 1’. Publication dates vary; most maps were published in 1960s to 1990s, with some sheets revised more recently.
