Map No. 226, Joshua Tree National Park, CA, in an extensive series of GPS compatible, contoured hiking maps of USA’s national & state parks or forests & other popular recreational areas. Cartography based on the national topographic survey, with additional tourist information. The maps, with most titles now printed on light, waterproof & tear-resistant plastic paper, highlight walking trails along with campsites & other accommodation, picnic sites, areas for various recreational pursuits such as horse riding or skiing, drinking water sources, & many other facilities of interest to the outdoor enthusiast. Cartography is based on information from the USGS (United States Geological Survey
- the country’s national survey organization), revised by the National Geographic Maps in cooperation with the National Park Service, USDA Forest Service, etc. Topography is excellently presented by contours (interval varies according to scale), enhanced by relief shading & colouring/graphics for wood cover, glaciers, etc. All heights are given in feet. The maps have a UTM grid plus latitude & longitude margin ticks & GPS waypoints for selected important locations. Each map is double-sided to give either maximum coverage of the chosen area or additional enlargements of its important sections. Accompanying notes provide useful information on relevant regulations, safety precautions, contact addresses, etc.* *IMPORTANT
- PLEASE NOTE: the series is very extensive, ranging in scale from 1:400, 000 for the vast national parks of Alaska to 1:25, 000 for local map in several states. We recommend, therefore, viewing the series by state rather than the whole list.*

The amazing tale of a resourceful & unscrupulous early-19th-century American adventurer who forges his own kingdom in the wilds of Afghanistan. In the year 1838, a young adventurer, surrounded by his native troops & mounted on an elephant, raised the American flag on the summit of the Hindu Kush & declared himself Prince of Ghor, the heir to Alexander the Great. Josiah Harlan, the first American to set foot in Afghanistan, would become the model for Kipling`s ` The Man Who Would be King`, but the true story of his life is stranger than fiction. A soldier, spy, doctor, naturalist & writer, Harlan set off into the wilds of Central Asia after a failed love affair in 1820. Following a brief stint as a surgeon in the East India Company`s army, he joined the court of the deposed Afghan monarch Shah Shujah, & then slipped into Kabul disguised as a Muslim priest to foment rebellion. For the next two decades he would play a pivotal role in the bloody politics of the region. Using a trove of newly discovered documents, including Harlan`s long-lost journals, Ben Macintyre has followed Harlan`s footsteps to uncover an astonishing, untold chapter in the history of the Great Game. If you enjoyed William Dalrymple`s ` Return of a King`, ` Josiah the Great` should be on your reading list. ...

From April 1942 to March 1944, Helene Berr, a recent graduate of the Sorbonne, kept a journal that is both an intensely moving, intimate, harrowing, appalling document & a text of astonishing literary maturity. With her colleagues, she plays the violin & she seeks refuge from the everyday in what she calls the ”selfish magic” of English literature & poetry. But this is Paris under the occupation & her family is Jewish. Eventually, there comes the time when all Jews are required to wear a yellow star. She tries to remain calm & rational, keeping to what routine she can: studying, reading, enjoying the beauty of Paris. Yet always there is fear for the future, & eventually, in March 1944, Helene & her family are arrested, taken to Drancy Transit Camp & soon sent to Auschwitz. She went
- as is later discovered
- on the death march to Bergen-Belsen & there she died in 1945, only five days before the liberation of the camp. The last words in the journal she had left behind in Paris were ” Horror! Horror! Horror!”, a hideous & poignant echo of her English studies. Helene Berr`s story is almost too painful to read, foreshadowing horror as it does amidst an enviable appetite for life, for beauty, for literature, for all that lasts.

' Sunday. I Killed & Buried My Best Friend Today'. It would be one last youthful journey. A classic road trip across America. This was the Kerouac-style dream of Raffi Kodakian & his closest friend David Coughlin. The trip was never completed. Within weeks, David Coughlin was dead, killed by his friend, apparently as an act of mercy, after being lost in a desert for days & suffering from extreme dehydratin. But soon questions began to be asked. Stories of Kodakian's violent temper began to emerge. Kodakian's girlfriend had been very close to Coughlin. How did they get lost in a desert canyon which thousands of other visitors had managed to navigate. & how could a young man kill his best friend, even in mercy? The pair kept a journal that they wrote in, right up to the end, extracts from which are reproduced in the book, offering clues to what really happened to the pair during their missing days in the desert. Kodakian is the only person who knows for certain
- & he was eventually charged with murder. The result of the court case is the thrilling denouement to this extraordinary book.
