When the Aleppian Jewish community migrated from the ancient city of Aleppo in historic Syria & settled in New York & Latin American cities in the early 20th century, it brought its rich cuisine & vibrant culture. Most Syrian recipes & traditions, however, were not written down & existed only in the minds of older generations. Poopa Dweck, a first generation Syrian-Jewish American, has devoted much of her life to preserving & celebrating her community`s centuries-old legacy. Dweck relates the history & culture of her community through its extraordinary cuisine, offering more than 180 exciting ethnic recipes with tantalising photos & describing the unique customs that the Aleppian Jewish community observes during holidays & lifecycle events. Among the irresistible recipes are: Bazargan-Tangy Tamarind Bulgur Salad; Shurbat Addes-Hearty Red Lentil Soup with Garlic & Coriander; Kibbeh-Stuffed Syrian Meatballs with Ground Rice; Samak b` Batata-Baked Middle Eastern Whole Fish with Potatoes; Sambousak-Buttery Cheese-Filled Sesame Pastries; Eras bi` Ajweh-Date-Filled Crescents; &, Chai Na`na-Refreshing Mint Tea. Like mainstream Middle Eastern cuisines, Aleppian Jewish dishes are alive with flavour & healthful ingredients-featuring whole grains, vegetables, legumes, & olive oil-but with their own distinct cultural influences. In ” Aromas of Aleppo”, cooks will discover the best of Poopa Dweck`s recipes, which gracefully combine Mediterranean & Levantine influences, & range from small delights (or maza) to daily meals & regal holiday feasts
- such as the twelve-course Passover seder.

Cycling an average of 90km a day, often in extreme conditions on badly-maintained gravel & sand roads, being thrown into jail in Equatorial Guinea by aggressive & drunken border police, & facing possible death when taken hostage by drugged Liberian teenage rebels may not be a conventional idea of truly 'living', but, in November 2003, Riaan Manser rode out of Cape Town, determined to become the first person to circumnavigate Africa by bicycle. He thought it would take him a year
- it took him over two. At the end of 2005, he cycled back into Cape Town, 14kg lighter & having covered 36 500 km through thirty-four countries. Intending to use his journey to generate local & international awareness of the often appalling standard of living in Africa, Riaan was also propelled by a strong desire for African adventure, a desire that was inevitably fulfilled. While Riaan's journey allowed him to experience some of the greatest generosity & kindness that he had ever encountered, often from the poorest of the poor, his adventures were also often of a more harrowing kind. In Around Africa on my Bicycle, Riaan allows the reader to relive the toil, excitement & occasional terror of his journey
- negotiating the Sahara & Libyan deserts, learning French, Portuguese & Arabic, eating monkey, rat & bat, standing in front of the pyramids, being awarded the freedom of the Red Sea in Egypt, feeding hyenas mouth to mouth, & standing on the highest, as well as at the lowest, points in Africa. Riaan arrived safely in Cape Town on 25 November 2005.
