- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! A prominent Viennese psychiatrist before the war, Viktor Frankl was uniquely able to observe the way that both he & others in Auschwitz coped (or didn`t) with the experience. He noticed that it was the men who comforted others & who gave away their last piece of bread who survived the longest
- & who offered proof that everything can be taken away from us except the ability to choose our attitude in any given set of circumstances. The sort of person the concentration camp prisoner became was the result of an inner decision & not of camp influences alone. Frankl came to believe man`s deepest desire is to search for meaning & purpose. This outstanding work offers us all a way to transcend suffering & find significance in the art of living.

Jung Chang`s Wild Swans was an extraordinary bestseller throughout the world, selling more than 10 million copies & reaching a wider readership than any other book about China. Now she & her husband Jon Halliday have written a groundbreaking biography of Mao Tse-tung. Based on a decade of research, & on interviews with many of Mao`s close circle in China who have never talked before
- & with virtually everyone outside China who had significant dealings with him
- this is the most authoritative life of Mao ever written. It is full of startling revelations, exploding the myth of the Long March, & showing a completely unknown Mao: he was not driven by idealism or ideology; his intimate & intricate relationship with Stalin went back to the 1920s, ultimately bringing him to power; he welcomed Japanese occupation of much of China; & he schemed, poisoned & blackmailed to get his way. After Mao conquered China in 1949, his secret goal was to dominate the world. In chasing this dream he caused the deaths of 38 million people in the greatest famine in history. In all, well over 70 million Chinese perished under Mao`s rule
- in peacetime. Combining meticulous history with the story-telling style of Wild Swans, this biography makes immediate Mao`s roller-coaster life, as he intrigued & fought every step of the way to force through his unpopular decisions. The reader enters the shadowy chambers of Mao`s court, & eavesdrops on the drama in its hidden recesses. Mao`s character & the enormity of his behaviour towards his wives, mistresses & children are unveiled for the first time. This is an entirely fresh look at Mao in both content & approach. It will astonish historians & the general reader alike.

Between 1958 & 1962, China descended into hell. Mao Zedong threw his country into a frenzy with the Great Leap Forward, an attempt to catch up to & overtake Britain in less than 15 years. The experiment ended in the greatest catastrophe the country had ever known, destroying tens of millions of lives. So opens Frank Dikotter's astonishing, riveting, magnificently detailed chronicle of an era in Chinese history much speculated about but never before fully documented because access to Communist Party archives has long been restricted to all but the most trusted historians. A new archive law has opened up thousands of central & provincial documents that fundamentally change the way one can study the Maoist era. Dikotter makes clear, as nobody has before, that far from being the program that would lift the country among the world's superpowers & prove the power of Communism, as Mao imagined, the Great Leap Forward transformed the country in the other direction. It became not only one of the most deadly mass killings of human history, but the greatest demolition of real estate in human history, (between 30 per cent & 40 per cent of all housing was turned into rubble), & a catastrophe for the natural world as well, as the land was savaged in the maniacal pursuit of steel & other industrial accomplishments. Dikotter's extraordinary research in Chinese archives for the first time links up what happened in the corridors of power-the vicious backstabbing & bullying tactics that took place among party leaders-with the everyday experiences of ordinary people, giving voice to the dead & disenfranchised. His magisterial account recasts the history of the People's Republic of China. ...

Mao Zedong was one of the most important figures of the twentieth century, the most important in the history of modern China. This revelatory new biography draws on thousands of Russian documents about Mao & other Chinese leaders that have not been seen before. Pantsov & Levine trace Mao`s rise to leadership from the small village where he was born & show his relentless drive to succeed, vividly describing his growing role in the nascent Communist party of China. They disclose startling facts about his personal life, particularly regarding his health & his lifelong, serial affairs with young women. Mao was a complex figure, champion of the poor & brutal tyrant, poet & despot. He brought his country from poverty & economic backwardness into the modern age, led a national revolution & made the rest of the world respect China. But he was also responsible for a loss of life exceeding even that of Hitler & Stalin. A disciple of Stalin, he turned against the USSR after Khrushchev came to power, determined that China would depend on no other country. Mao remade his weak country into a powerful one & shrewdly renewed relations with the U.S. as a counter to the USSR. He lived & behaved as China`s last emperor. Now readers will have the full story of his life & rule as never before. ...
