” On an impulse, Trudi-Ann Tierney, Sydney producer & former actress, goes to Kabul to manage a bar. She quickly falls into the local TV industry, where she becomes responsible for producing a highly popular soap opera. Trudi`s staff are hugely inexperienced. They include Habib, the Pashto poet who wants to insert allegorical scenes involving fighting ants into the scripts; Rashid, the Dari manager, who spends all day surreptitiously watching uncensored Hindi music videos; & the Pakistani actresses who cross the border to Jalalabad (` Jallywood`) to perform roles that no Afghan actresses can take on without bringing shame to their families. Trudi lives among the expat community
- the media, the burnt-out army types now working as security contractors, the ` Do-Gooders`, the diplomats
- in dubious guest houses like The Dirty Diana. This is ` Ka-bubble`, where the reckless encounters with each other, with alcohol & of course with recreational drugs are as dangerous as the city`s streets. Here are crazy people living crazy lives, & locals trying to survive as best they can against the backdrop of war.”

How the conflict between political Islamists & secular nationalists has shaped the history of the modern Middle East In 2013, justust two years after the popular overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian military ousted the country`s first democratically elected president--Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood--and subsequently led a brutal repression of the Islamist group. These bloody events echoed an older political rift in Egypt & the Middle East: the splitting of nationalists & Islamists during the rule of Egyptian president & Arab nationalist leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. In Making the Arab World, Fawaz Gerges, one of the world`s leading authorities on the Middle East, tells how the clash between pan-Arab nationalism & pan-Islamism has shaped the history of the region from the 1920s to the present. Gerges tells this story through an unprecedented dual biography of Nasser & another of the twentieth-century Arab world`s most influential figures--Sayyid Qutb, a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood & the father of many branches of radical political Islam. Their deeply intertwined lives embody & dramatize the divide between Arabism & Islamism. Yet, as Gerges shows, beyond the ideological & existential rhetoric, this is a struggle over the state, its role, & its power. Based on a decade of research, including in-depth interviews with many leading figures in the story, Making the Arab World is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the roots of the turmoil engulfing the Middle East, from civil wars to the rise of Al-Qaeda & ISIS. ...

Malacqua

After a four-day deluge, Naples is flooded. Buildings collapse, sinkholes appear. Strange events spread across the city: ghostly voices emanate from a medieval castle and five-lire coins begin to play music, but only to ten-year-old children. A melancholy journalist searches for meaning as the narrative takes us into the minds of those who have suffered in the floods. Despite phenomenal initial success, the novel was withdrawn from publication at the author`s request, and not reissued until after his death in 2012. Now translated into English for the first time, Malacqua remains a timely critique and a richly peopled portrait of a much-mythologised city.
