London has witnessed everything from pilgrimages, celebrations, acts of heroism & moments of religious contemplation to riots, executions, grisly murders & disastrous fires. It is a history of work & capital, of power & exuberance, & of great creativity from a rich host of artists & writers, Shakespeare & Dickens among them, but also of violent crime, exploitation, loneliness & extreme hardship; life in the poverty ridden East of the city could not be more different than life in its opulent West End. Drawing upon extracts from contemporary letters, diaries & memoirs of fascinating inhabitants & visitors, this anthology by acclaimed London historian Peter Ackroyd & Thomas Wright tells the story of the city from its earliest years up to the present day. Here you will find Evelyn's famous account of the Great Fire in 1666, Dickens' brilliant evocation of the Gordon Riots of 1780, Boswell's description of the compilation of Dr Johnson's Dictionary, & Churchill's recollections of the Blitz. Modern visitors & armchair readers alike are given a ringside view to the past & an unforgettable experience of the essential spirit of London. ...

London has been under attack for literally centuries. Michael Foley`s book records the dramatic military history of the capital from Roman times until the Second World War & beyond. Throughout its early history London was at the centre of hostilities, not always instigated by foreign enemies, but more often from the city`s own inhabitants or those from other parts of Britain. As well as the terrible Blitz on London during the Second World War, earlier conflicts which made an impact on the city are also documented, including the Civil Wars of twelfth & seventeenth centuries, the wars between King John & the barons, uprisings against the poll tax, the Gordon Riots & numerous other rebellions & conflicts that have been largely forgotten in the twenty-first century. London Under Attack is a must-read for all those interested in military history as well as the turbulent history of our nation`s capital & draws some interesting comparisons between the past & modern times. ...
