Lines in the Ice asks why Europeans have for so long been drawn to the Arctic, following the course of major journeys to the region, assessing the impact of this on the North`s indigenous communities & revealing how important this exploration has been in making the modern world. As well as drawing out this rich & vivid history, the book focuses on the beauty the Arctic has created by inspiring those who live in the landscape or have spent their lives exploring it. It is richly illustrated throughout with topographical views, innovative photography & particularly maps. The first section, ` Blank Spaces?`, uncovers the deep history of European interest in the Arctic, & the ways its rare tradable goods & mineral riches have long drawn explorers into contact with indigenous people. The central section charts 18th- & 19th-century attempts to trace a route through the Arctic ice. In a final section, the author asks how the Arctic`s history influences the present. Using Cold War maps, historic photographs & modern scientific models, they draw out the links between exploration & climate change, as well as examining how this changing landscape affects today`s Arctic communities & global politics. ...

` By miles the most brilliant journalist of our age` Lynn Barber `A golden writer` Andrew Marr A. A. Gill was rightly hailed as one of the greatest journalists of our time. This selection of some of his recent pieces, which he made himself before his untimely death, spans the last five years from all corners of the world. It shows him at his most perceptive, brilliant & funny. His subjects range from the controversial
- fur
- to the heartfelt
- a fantastic crystallisation of what it means to be European. He tackles life drawing, designs his own tweed, considers boyhood through the prism of the Museum of Childhood, & spends a day at Donald Trump`s university. In his final two articles he wrote with characteristic wit & courage about his cancer diagnosis
- `the full English
- & the limits of the NHS. But more than any other subject, a recurring theme emerges in the overwhelming story of our times: the refugee crisis. In the last few years A. A. Gill wrote with compassion & anger about the refugees` story, giving us both its human face & its appalling context. The resulting articles are journalism at its finest & fiercest.

‘ Glorious… Political, passionate, perceptive’ Robert Macfarlane Our landscape has been transformed by a vast network of lines, from hedges & walls to railways & power cables. In Linescapes, Hugh Warwick unravels the far-reaching ecological consequences of these changes. As our lives & our land were fenced in & threaded together, wildlife habitats were cut into ever smaller – & increasingly unviable – fragments. Yet as Warwick travels across this linescape, he shows that we can help our flora & fauna to flourish once again. With his fresh & bracing perspective on Britain’s countryside, he proposes a challenge & gives ground for hope, for our lines can & do contain a real potential for wildness & for wildlife. ...

Line Of Fire: Diary Of An Unknown Soldier August - September 1914

”We need the voice of a witness to tell the unadulterated truth. We have it in the remarkable book.” - MICHAEL MORPURGO. One winter`s morning, illustrator Barroux was walking down a street in Paris when he made an extraordinary discovery: the diary of a soldier in the First World War.Barroux rescued the diary from the rubbish heap, took the diary back to his studio and subsequently illustrated the soldier`s words. The result is a striking graphic novel adaptation of the soldier`s moving and powerful account of war.The diary was discovered along with a medal and a song lyrics in the back of the diary that continue until 1917. But there is no name in the diary - the name on the cover has long faded. He remains the unknown soldier. We just have his words, and it is in his own words and
Barroux`s extraordinary pictures that his story his told. The diary recounts the first few months of the First World War, from the moment France declares war and mobilisation is announced, until early September 1914.Our soldier`s diary tells of the long journeys and endless nights; the search for food and wine; the friendships and the courage in the trenches; the sound of gunfire and the pain of swollen feet; and a narrow escape. In the words of Michael Morpurgo, who has written a special introduction to the book, this is `a witness statement, the untrammelled, unedited voice of someone who was there.` This is one man`s story silhouetted against the great backdrop of history and the events of 1914 that formed and transformed the world we live in today. - REVIEWS - ”This book should
