Lee Miller`s work for Vogue from 1941-1945 sets her apart as a photographer & writer of extraordinary ability. The quality of her photography from the period has long been recognized as outstanding, & its full range is shown here, accompanied by her brilliant despatches. Starting with her first report from a field hospital soon after D-Day, the despatches & nearly 160 photographs show war-ravaged cities, buildings & landscapes, but above all they portray the war-resilient people soldiers, leaders, medics, evacuees, prisoners of war, the wounded, the villains & the heroes. There is the raw edge of combat portrayed at the siege of St Malo & in the bitterly fought Alsace campaign, & the disbelief & outrage Miller describes on witnessing the victims of Dachau. The wars horror is relieved by the spirit of post-liberation Paris, where she indulged in frivoluous fashions & recorded memorable conversations with Picasso, Cocteau, Eluard, Aragon & Colette. The book ends with Millers first-on-the-scene report giving a sardonic description of HItlers abandoned house in Munich, & the looting & burning of his alpine fortress at Berchtesgaden, which marked a symbolic end to the war. David E. Scherman, the renowned war photojournalist who shared many of Millers assignments, contributes a foreword. ...

Edition A2; Publication date April 2010 About this series: These highly detailed maps show all the administrative boundaries, settlements as small as isolated farms, the road network down to unfenced roads & country tracks, & field boundaries (hedges & drystone walls) which make navigation across the countryside much easier. The Explorer series has replaced the earlier, green-cover Pathfinder maps. The Explorer series is now complete & covers all of Engl&, Wales & Scotl&. Some sheets for popular areas like the National Parks are still branded as Outdoor Leisure (OL) maps, but are now included in this series as the cartography is the same as that in the Explorer Maps. The Explorer maps offer a substantial improvement on the Pathfinder series, with greater use of colour, larger area per map, & stronger emphasis on information for ramblers & tourists. A tourist map of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal & Aire & Calder & Calder & Hebble Navigations at 1:50, 000, with detailed town plans of Skipton, Bingley, Leeds, Wakefield, Mirfield, Brighouse & Sower Bridge at 1:12, 500. Suitable for both waterways & leisure users. This map gives detailed coverage of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, from Foulridge to Leeds, the Aire & Calder & Calder & Hebble Navigations from Leeds to Knottingley & Castleford to Sowerby Bridge with emphasis on the waterways & information useful & relevant to users of the waterways without neglecting other leisure users. The map detail is complimented by information panels & photographs. The Leeds & Liverpool Canal is a popular cruising route & although a lengthy canal to navigate or explore all in one visit, the settlements, canal features & ever changing landscapes along its route make it worthy of return visits by boat, car, bicycle or on foot. As with many of the canals on the system it is a canal of real contrasts, in places it is quiet & tranquil, in others vibrant & bustling. The canal skirts the Yorkshire Dales National Park near Gargrave, offering some of the most picturesque views anywhere on the network. It passes Saltaire, a World Heritage Site & at Bingley there`s the stunning Bingley Five Rise Locks considered one of the Wonders of the Waterways. From Leeds city centre the Aire & Calder heads past the regenerated Leeds Dock, home to the Royal Armouries Museum, south to Castleford. At Castleford Junction the main line heads eastwards to the port of Goole, via Knottingley (the extent of this map), whilst the Wakefield Branch heads westwards to Wakefield. Both the Aire & Calder & Calder & Hebble Navigations were originally rivers that were significant changed with numerous cuts to make them more viable for commercial traffic. It is due to the commercial nature of the waterway that the locks on the Aire & Calder are 200ft (61m) long. The Calder & Hebble runs for 21 miles between Sowerby Bridge & Wakefield, along alternating stretches of river & cuts. Places of interest include the waterside Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, the basin at Sowerby Bridge with fine canalside buildings, covered docks & home to Shire Cruisers, Brighouse with interesting shops & buildings & split level basin, Salterhebble Locks featuring one of the very few functioning guillotine locks & a short arm into Dewsbury. Includes::
tourist information centres, places of interest, pubs, nature reserves, parks, churches, long distance paths, public toilets & caravan & camp sites. For centuries the Pennines presented a barrier to cross country trade in the north. Eventually the growth of the cotton & textile industries led to the construction of a canal between Liverpool & Leeds. It was built as a broad canal which permitted wide beamed boats, capable of carrying greater loads, enabling it to be a success. Today the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is a popular cruising route & although a lengthy canal to navigate or explore all in one visit, the settlements, canal features & ever changing landscapes along its route make it worthy of return visits by boat, car, bicycle or on foot. As with many of the canals on the system it is a canal of real contrasts, in places it is quiet & tranquil, in others vibrant & bustling. The once shabby nearly unnavigable Liverpool end has been revitalised now that the Liverpool Canal Link is open, creating a passageway through an important historic city & port, whilst at the opposite end the waterfront area of Leeds is undergoing an exciting transformation.

Leeds

Following his portraits of Dublin and Liverpool, photographer Paul Barker turns his attention to Leeds, the largest and most important city in West Yorkshire. As a result of the Industirla Revolution, the population of Leeds grew from 10, 000 in 1700 to 150, 000 by 1840 and it became the cenre not only of engineering but also of communications. As a result of its canal and rail connections, at one point nearly half of England`s total exports passed through Leeds. Paul Barker`s photography explores the city district by district, from the Victoria Quarter, with its opulent shopping arcades between Briggate and Vicar Lane, to the vibrant cultural quarter, which contains the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds College of Music and the Royal Armories Museum. Leeds was voted `UK`s favourite
city` by Conde Nast Traveler magazine in 2004, `Best English city to visit outside of London` in 2005 and `Visitor city of the year` by the Good Britain Guide in 2005.
