Looking back at the lives & sailing careers of some of our lifetime`s finest yachtsmen, this collection of eleven original, moving accounts is just as much a celebration of the good
- tales of hope, achievement & courageous spirit
- as it is an account of their tragic final voyages. Included are world-renowned racers, like Eric Tabarly & Rob James, highly experienced cruisers & adventurers, like Peter Tangvald & Bill Tilman, & the notoriously ill-prepared Donald Crowhurst, as well as other famous & some less well-known sailors. Starting with the sad loss of Frank Davison & Reliance in 1949, the book concludes with the amazing last voyage of Philip Walwyn in 2015
- crossing the Atlantic single-handed in his 12 Metre yacht Kate. All of the men & women described were friends with or known to the author, Nicholas Gray, who himself competed in several short-handed long distance races, where he met & raced against many of these fascinating characters. Peppered with photographs showcasing the sailors & their yachts, this is a refreshing look at those who have helped to shape this sport`s history, honouring their lives & accomplishments before detailing their tragic last voyages.

Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

A ground-breaking book, designed to help creative cooks develop their own recipes, from the bestselling author of The Flavour Thesaurus. One dish leads to another... Lateral Cooking is, in a sense, the `method` companion to its bestselling predecessor, The Flavour Thesaurus
- & is just as useful, ingeniously organised & enjoyable to read. The book is divided into 12 chapters, each covering a basic culinary category, such as ` Bread`, ` Sauces` or ` Custard`. The recipes in each chapter are then arranged on a continuum, the transition from one recipe to another generally amounting to a tweak or two in the method or ingredients. Which is to say, one dish leads to another: once you`ve got the hang of flatbreads, for instance, then its neighbouring dishes on the continuum (crackers, soda bread, scones) will involve the easiest & most intuitive adjustment. The result is greater creativity in the kitchen: Lateral Cooking encourages improvisation, resourcefulness, &, ultimately, the knowledge & confidence to cook by heart. Lateral Cooking is essentially a practical book, but like The Flavour Thesaurus it`s also a highly enjoyable read. The ` Flavours & Variations` sections, for example, draw widely on culinary science, history, ideas from professional kitchens, observations by renowned food writers & personal recollection. Entertaining, opinionated & inspirational, Lateral Cooking will have you torn between donning your apron & settling back in a comfortable chair.

In 2010, Clive James was diagnosed with terminal leukemia. Deciding that ”if you don`t know the exact moment when the lights will go out, you might as well read until they do, ” James moved his library to his house in Cambridge, where he would ”live, read, & perhaps even write.” James is the award-winning author of dozens of works of literary criticism, poetry, & history, & this volume contains his reflections on what may well be his last reading list. A look at some of James`s old favorites as well as some of his recent discoveries, this book also offers a revealing look at the author himself, sharing his evocative musings on literature & family, & on living & dying. As thoughtful & erudite as the works of Alberto Manguel, & as moving & inspiring as Randy Pausch`s The Last Lecture & Will Schwalbe`s The End of Your Life Book Club, this valediction to James`s lifelong engagement with the written word is a captivating valentine from one of the great literary minds of our time. ...
