Map No. J-11D in the TPC series: military topographic survey mapping covering the world's land masses & significant islands at 1:500, 000. The maps are useful as general topographical coverage where nothing else is available, although they are designed primarily as flying charts for military aircraft. TPC stands for Tactical Pilotage Chart. Relief is portrayed by a combination of contours (basic interval 500ft, intermediate contours shown where appropriate), elevation tinting & relief shading, plus spot heights. Towns, villages, major roads, railways & airports are shown but please note that many of the smaller settlements are not named & the road information is not necessarily up to date, as compilation & revision dates vary. Some air navigation information also appears on the map, such as radio beacons & restricted flying zones. Each TPC chart has both UTM & latitude/longitude grids overprinted on it, with additional margin ticks. IMPORTANT
- PLEASE NOTE: The series is gradually being withdrawn from sale to the general public & some sheets may no longer be available when ordered by us. Due to the nature of the map projection assembling these sheets to make a larger map is not recommended. in addition, colours used for relief are not constant throughout the series. Topographic survey of France at 1:25, 000 in IGN`s excellent TOP25 / Série Bleue series. All the maps are GPS compatible, with a 1km UTM grid plus latitude & longitude lines at 5’ intervals. Contours are at 5m intervals except for mountainous areas where the maps have contours at 10m intervals, vividly enhanced by hill shading & graphics for rocky terrain. Lapchgau, sheet no. 2886-13, in the topographic survey of Nepal at 1:50, 000 published by the Nepali Government in the late 1990s & early 2000s & produced from remote sensing data by Finnish cartographers as part of that country’s international aid program. The maps cover 15’ x 15’ quadrangles.IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE BEFORE ORDERING: AVAILABILITY: although, theoretically at least, still in print, these maps are very difficult to get locally in Nepal and/or from various suppliers elsewhere specializing in obtaining such maps. DELIVERIES MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS OR EVEN MONTHS.PROBLEMS WITH PLACE NAMES: reports from previous users indicate that transliteration of place names differs from that used widely not only on other maps & in guide books but also on the ground itself, in road signs & in the tourist & trekking industry in general. Lapchi Kang region at 1:50, 000 in a series of detailed topographic maps of selected trekking areas of Nepal originally prepared by E. Schneider & now edited by the German Scientific Association of Comparative High-Mountain Research (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für vergleichende Hochgebirgsforschung). The 1:50, 000 topographic map gives a more general picture of the ground features than a basic map. It shows settlements, houses, roads, cultivated areas, waterways, cutting areas, mires, rock exposures, & relief. One map sheet covers an area of 30 x 40 km & one centimetre corresponds to 500 metres on the ground. The 1:50, 000 topographic map is also an ideal complement to nautical charts as it provides useful information about the land areas adjacent to waterways. Jean Bobet’s “ Lapize… Now There Was an Ace” tells the story of one of the early greats of cycling & in particular the Tour de France. 2010 was the centenary of the introduction of the Pyrenees into the Tour de France route. It was a contentious decision at that time to send riders on their primitive bicycles into the high mountains. How Tour organiser Henri Desgrange was tricked by his assistant, Georges Steines, into agreeing to direct his riders over 2, 000-metre cols is one of the great legends of Tour history. The 1910 race itself was won by the French champion Octave Lapize, who added to the controversy on the top of the Col du Tourmalet by shouting out to the Tour officials, ` Vous êtes des assassins! Oui, des assassins!`
- ` You are murderers! Yes, murderers!` For Lapize himself, this was his only Tour victory, but he was an outstanding one-day classics rider & also a fine track cyclist, winning a bronze medal at the 1908 Olympics. During the First World War Lapize, a fighter pilot in the French army, was shot down in June, 1917, & died in a hospital the following month. For all his initial misgivings, Desgrange had no hesitation in calling the Pyrenean venture a great success & those high cols immediately became an indispensable part of any Tour route. In the 100 years since Octave Lapize`s first epic ascent the Tourmalet has figured 73 times, & none so memorably than that very first time.
