This is a penetrating study of many aspects of life, thought, & everyday existence in Scandinavia, as experienced through the author`s 9-year residence in the enlightened far north in the 1960s. Robert Corfe is primarily known as a thought-provoking writer of books published in the 21st century, but this work comprises a selection of his articles published in the Finnish press, popular magazines, & learned journals in the 1960s. The collected articles are put into context for a contemporary readership by a lively introductory chapter entitled, Seeing The Future Through The Past, which describes how Scandinavia was 50 years in advance of Britain in terms of political thinking & social development. & now Britain has caught up & shares in the benefits & also the dis-benefits of a modernised technological society. Of considerable interest are the articles on British society & its problems, as viewed through the eyes of a British resident acclimatised to the cultural environment of Finnish life. The articles reflect clearly the development of the author`s political ideas on the need for a classless society in more effectively contributing to communal prosperity & internal harmony. The Scandinavians` enviable policy of neutrality & disengagement from the conflicts of the great power blocs in achieving national security is highlighted as contributing to the happiness of their people. In view of an impending new Cold War between Russia & the West, the arguments developed are perhaps of greater significance today than when they were formulated more than 40 years ago. Many of these ideas were to be given greater depth in the author`s major works published many years later in the 21st century. Perhaps most entertaining in this collection is the delicious satirical story, What The Watchdog Saw, a savage attack on the absurdities of the British far left as well as those of the far right. As a percipient introduction to the mindset of the enlightened Scandinavian people, based on both scholarship & personal experience, this book could hardly be bettered for such a purpose. ...

Rich portrayals of Sufis & ageing aristocrats, smugglers & underground rock bands are all woven together with history, religion & mythology to form a unique portrait of contemporary Iranian society. &, running through the heart of the narrative, lies Massoudi`s poignant personal quest; his struggle echoing that of Iran itself, as it fights to forge a cohesive modern identity. Land of the Turquoise Mountains reveals a world beyond the propaganda-driven, media-fuelled image of fractious, flag-burning fundamentalism & provides a compelling glimpse both into the heart of a deeply misunderstood nation & into what it is to seek out & discover one`s heritage. ...

dozens of publications, car shows, clubs, associations & even model car collectors who dedicate their lives to the Land Rover. To understand this national love affair, Ben has travelled the length of the British Isles in a Defender, spending time with fellow Land Rover enthusiasts: from visiting Colonel Blashford-Snell, who crossed the jungles of the Darien Gap, to patrolling the streets of Belfast with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Ben has met folk who have converted their beloved Defenders into everything from hearses & coffee shops to works of art & fire trucks. He has travelled from the Red Wharf in Anglesey, Wales onto the Western Isles of Scotland & Islay, the island used as a testing ground by Spencer Wilks in 1947 to put several of the early Series Land Rover prototypes through their paces. After 67 years & 2 million vehicles the Land Rover Defender has ceased production, & this book is a fitting tribute to this most British institution which has stood as a beacon of durability & Britishness across the world. Land Rover

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the long-established Rover company of Solihull was fighting to survive. It needed a vehicle that would give it an advantage over its rivals. Taking the American Willys Jeep as inspiration, Rover designers came up with a four-wheel-drive utility vehicle that would become an all-time classic. The Land Rover has undergone a number of facelifts in its sixty-year life, but the vehicle still made today is fundamentally very close to the 1948 original. After 1970 the original was joined by a host of other models including the Discovery, Range Rover, and Freelander. This is this story of Land Rover, written by the foremost historian of the make, encompassing all the models and dividing them according to their use. The distinguished histories of Land
Rover on expedition, in agriculture, warfare, and in many other fields are told separately.
