Inspired by the surreal accounts of the explorer & `man of a million lies` Marco Polo, Imaginary Cities charts the metropolis & the imagination, & the symbiosis therein. A work of creative nonfiction, the book roams through space, time & possibility, mapping cities of sound, melancholia & the afterlife, where time runs backwards or which float among the clouds. In doing so, Imaginary Cities seeks to move beyond the cliches of psychogeography & hauntology, to not simply revisit the urban past, or our relationship with it, but to invade & reinvent it. Following in the lineage of Borges, Calvino, Chris Marker & Kenneth White, the book examines the city from global macrocosm to the microcosm of its inhabitants` perspectives. It proceeds through opium dreams, sea voyages, the hallucinations of prisoners, nocturnal decadence, impossible Soviet skyscrapers, marauding golems, subterranean civilisations, apocalyptic prophecies & the work of architectural visionaries such as Antonio Sant` Elia, Archigram & Buckminster Fuller. It rethinks the ideas of utopias & dystopias, urban exploration, alienation & resistance. It claims that the Situationists lacked ambition when they suggested, ” Beneath the paving stones, the beach.” Instead, beneath the paving stones, we may just be able to discern the entire universe. Imaginary Cities demonstrates that each city dreamt up by artists, writers, architects & lunatics has a real-life equivalent & that the great Marco Polo was no liar. Imaginary Cities need not simply exist in fiction or the mind. We already inhabit them. ...

Poetry was Louis de Bernieres` first literary love & Imagining Alexandria is his debut poetry collection. Here the author of the much-loved Captain Corelli`s Mandolin returns us to the vivid Mediterranean landscape of his fiction. De Bernieres was introduced to Greek poetry while in Corfu in 1983, & since then he has always travelled with a book of Cavafy`s poetry in his pocket. Not surprisingly, his own poems about the distant past, the erotic & the philosophical owe much to the influence of the great Alexandrian poet. Beautifully illustrated with line drawings by Donald Sammut, this is a collection rich in sensuality, nostalgia, & music. ...

Imagining the Arctic explores the culture & politics of polar exploration & the making of its heroes. Leading explorers, the celebrity figures of their day, went to great lengths to convince their contemporaries of the merits of polar voyages. Much of exploration was in fact theatre: a series of performances to capture public attention & persuade governments to finance ambitious proposals. The achievements of explorers were promoted, celebrated, & manipulated, whilst explorers themselves became the subject of huge attention. Huw Lewis-Jones draws upon recovered texts & striking images, many reproduced for the first time since the nineteenth century, to show how exploration was projected through a series of spectacular visuals, helping us to reconstruct the ways that heroes & the wilderness were imagined. Elegantly written & richly illustrated, Imagining the Arctic offers original insights into our understanding of exploration & its pull on the public imagination. ...
