Iraqi Kurdistan at the turn of the twenty-first century is a territory ruled by strongmen, revolutionaries, fixers, bureaucrats & the ” Barons”, who control everything from livestock & land to Kurdish cultural life. Defying the absolute power wielded by the Barons, a band of friends led by a poet embarks on an odyssey to find the bodies of two lovers killed unjustly by the authorities. The Barons respond by attempting to crush these would-be avengers, though their real war is waged against the imagination itself
- despite the fact that imagination in its myriad forms is a prized, elusive commodity for which intellectuals, merchants, political elites & humble workers all search in one way or another. The stark realities of a rapidly changing yet still traumatised society are woven through with elements of the fantastic: a boy is born with a poem etched into his chest; a wild-eyed mystic consummates his love for a married woman in the spirit world; a political assassin discovers compassion & can no longer kill; a Hollywood film buff leads a cluster of blind children on an imaginary sea journey. Bakhtiyar Ali`s visionary novel is a soulful meditation on both political & poetic power. The Gardens of the Imagination is a trip, in more ways than one: a tale of people travelling great distances in their minds or with their feet. It is a phantasmagoric, lyrical interpretation of contemporary Kurdistan, so much in the news nowadays but otherwise so little known. Told by several unreliable narrators in a kaleidoscope of fragments that all eventually cohere, the author manages the neat trick of dipping the reader into a mesmerising fantasia just long enough before wrenching her or him back to hard, cold ”real life”. Bakhtiyar Ali has said that he wrote this novel in part to ”end the subordination of Kurdish writers to the will of politicians”
- but he has made real poetry out of this protest.I Stared at the Night of the City is a trip, in more ways than one: a tale of extraordinary people traveling great distances, in their minds or with their feet. It is a lyrical interpretation of contemporary Kurdistan, so much in the news nowadays but otherwise so little understood. In these selected stories from her collections ” Aisha” & ” Sandpiper”, Ahdaf Soueif writes about love & displacement in prose that is delicately nuanced & acutely observed. These are achingly lyrical stories, resonant & richly woven. But they always retain an edginess as they explore areas of tension
- where women & men are ensnared by cultural & social mores & prescribed notions of `love`, where the place you are is not the place you want to be. She delivers her characters with infinite tenderness & compassion as they inhabit a world of lost opportunities, unfulfilled love & remembrance of times past.

Philosophers certainly like to make life sound awfully complicated, whether they`re wondering if a falling tree still makes a sound if there`s nobody around to hear it (Berkeley) or declaring that everything in the universe is in a state of flux (Heraclitus). But is philosophy really so complicated? & is it really as irrelevant as it sometimes seems? I Think, Therefore I Am is the ideal way to take the fear out of philosophy. Written in an accessible & highly entertaining style, this book explains how & why philosophy began, & how, from Greek democracy to Communism, the ways in which we live, learn, argue, vote & even spend our money have their origins in philosophical thought. Covering the biggest names, including Socrates, Seneca, St Augustine, Descartes, Marx & Nietzsche, I Think Therefore I Am provides a handle for all the main -isms & -ologies. ...

Like the best comedians, the best cartoonists address philosophy`s Big Questions. Cathcart & Klein reckon they`re individuals with philosophy doctorates who couldn`t find employment or, if they could, found serving lattes at Starbucks less fulfilling than they`d hoped. Covering topics as diverse as religion, gender, knowledge, morality & the meaning of life (or the lack thereof), I Think, Therefore I Draw is a joyous introduction to the major debates in philosophy through history & the present. Wittgenstein once said that a serious & good philosophical work could be written that would consist entirely of jokes. Let`s put that to the test... ...

I Survived Kerobokan

In 2012, Paul Conibeer, an Australian traveler was jailed in Bali`s infamous Kerobokan Prison - the home of Shapelle Corby, the `Bali Nine` and a host of international travellers on death row for smuggling drugs. Paul`s crime was so dramatic - a dispute over an unpaid hotel bill and his failure to `pay off` the right people in the Kuta Police system - saw him jailed for almost 12 months. In `I Survived Kerobokan Prison` Paul tells his harrowing story of sleeping on a tiled at Kuta Police Station for 60 days, using a water bottle as a pillow, before he was transferred to Kerobokan. After two months of hell in a stench-filled cell, Kerobokan brought Paul into contact with a wide variety of prisoners - murderers, rapists, drug mules and the innocent, like himself - all searching for
