Human Planet has been published to accompany the BBC’s groundbreaking natural history documentary of spring 2011. It is the first natural history documentary series to turn the camera on ourselves, the human species. Holding a mirror up to humanity, this book is a breathtaking celebration of the power of nature & our own ingenuity, showing us at our most beautiful; adaptive, cooperative, courageous, compassionate – & profoundly connected to our environment.. Each chapter is based on a single environment, taking us to remote grasslands, forbidding moun¬tains, waterless deserts, the freezing arctic, steaming jungles, raging rivers, vast oceans & even our urban world. Human Planet tells spellbinding stories to explore man’s unique relationship with his surroundings. In each habitat, with its own special challenges & gifts, there are remarkable stories of individuals & communities living in extreme landscapes with wild animals, seizing opportunities & overcoming incredible obstacles to survive & thrive. The stories & habitats are lavishly illustrated with colour photography from Timothy Allen, who accompanied the film crew on location to provide the book of Human Planet with lavish, striking images to accompany the intimate story-telling. The series will take the same approach to its topic as Planet Earth, explaining how human beings have learnt to live on every habitat, from our origins in the Jungle to our creation of the modern urban environment. It will also show how we have learnt to adapt to the most inhospitable landscapes & work in partnership with other animal species, as well as being a celebration of the remarkable story of man’s relationship with nature.
