By turns fascinating, funny, & horrifying, this is Nick Gordon`s account of more than 10 years spent in the Amazonian forests as a wildlife filmmaker, snorting ground-up seeds with the local shaman, building an artificial tarantula habitat to film the furry monsters mating, & killing & eating a two-foot snake. ...

One of the most impressive of all Victorian scientists but also a marvelous writer, Bates' (1825-1892) account of his years in the upper reaches of the Amazon is almost too good to be true
- a great monument to human inquisitiveness as he battles great hoards of malevolent reptiles & insects in his quest for ever more obscure specimens on ever more narrow & creeper-choked tributaries. Great Journeys allows readers to travel both around the planet & back through the centuries
- but also back into ideas & worlds frightening, ruthless & cruel in different ways from our own. Few reading experiences can begin to match that of engaging with writers who saw astounding things: great civilizations, walls of ice, violent & implacable jungles, deserts & mountains, & multitudes of birds & flowers new to science. Reading these books is to see the world afresh, to rediscover a time when many cultures were quite strange to each other, where legends & stories were treated as facts & in which so much was still to be discovered.

Nathaniel Philbrick tells the story of the sinking of the whale ship Essex by an enraged sperm whale & also describes in detail what happened to the twenty crew members who survived. Having escaped the whale attack they spent three months drifting in small boats before being rescued. This book is driven by the story of these men but also

The age of exploration was drawing to a close, yet the mystery of the North Pole remained. Contemporaries described the pole as the `unattainable object of our dreams`, & the urge to fill in this last great blank space on the map grew irresistible. In 1879 the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds & amid a frenzy of publicity. The ship & its crew, captained by the heroic George De Long, were destined for the uncharted waters of the Arctic. But it wasn`t long before the Jeannette was trapped in crushing pack ice. Amid the rush of water & the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew found themselves marooned a thousand miles north of Siberia with only the barest supplies, facing a seemingly impossible trek across endless ice. Battling everything from snow blindness & polar bears to ferocious storms & frosty labyrinths, the expedition fought madness & starvation as they desperately strove for survival. ...

The five centuries between the end of Roman Britain (410) & the death of Alfred the Great (899) have left few voices save a handful of chroniclers, but Britain`s ` Dark Ages` can still be explored through their material remnants: buildings, books, metalwork, &, above all, landscapes. Max Adams explores Britain`s lost early medieval past by walking its paths & exploring its lasting imprint on valley, hill & field. From York to Whitby, from London to Sutton Hoo, from Edinburgh to Anglesey & from Hadrian`s Wall to Loch Tay, each of his ten walk narratives form both free-standing chapters & parts of a wider portrait of a Britain of fort & fyrd, crypt & crannog, church & causeway, holy well & memorial stone. Part travelogue, part expert reconstruction, IN THE LAND OF GIANTS offers a beautifully written insight into the lives of peasants, drengs, ceorls, thanes, monks & kings during an enigmatic but richly exciting period of our island`s history. ...

In The Heart Of The Sea

The epic true-life story of one of the most notorious maritime disasters of the nineteenth century - and inspiration for `Moby Dick` - reissued to accompany a major motion picture due for release in December 2015. The sinking of the whaleship Essex by an enraged sperm whale in the Pacific in November 1820 set in motion one of the most dramatic sea stories of all time: the twenty sailors who survived the wreck took to three small boats (one of which was again attacked by a whale) and only eight of them survived their subsequent 90-day ordeal, after resorting to cannibalising their mates. Three months after the Essex was broken up, the whaleship Dauphin, cruising off the coast of South America, spotted a small boat in the open ocean. As they pulled alongside they saw piles of bones in
the bottom of the boat, at least two skeletons` worth, with two survivors - almost skeletons themselves - sucking the marrow from the bones of their dead ship-mates.
