Helga Weiss was born in Prague in 1929. Her father Otto was employed in the state bank in Prague & her mother Irena was a dressmaker. Of the 15, 000 children brought to Terezin & later deported to Auschwitz, only 100 survived the Holocaust. Helga was one of them. On her return to Prague she studied art & has become well known for her paintings. The drawings & paintings that Helga made during her time in Terezin, which accompany this diary, were published in 1998 in the book Draw What You See (Zeichne, was Du siehst). Her father's novel & God saw that it was bad, written during his time in Terezin & which she illustrated, was published in 2010. In 1954 Helga married the musician Jiri Hosek. She has two children, three grandchildren & lives to this day in the flat where she was born. ...

Helgeland Coast National Tourist Route in the county of Nordland runs between Holm & Godøystraumen & is 433 kilometres long, including the detour to Torghatten which is also part of the route. The main urban centres are Brønnøysund & Sandnessjøen in the south, & Ørnes in the north. Driving up the road you will cross the Arctic Circle & enter the land of the midnight sun. The mild coastal climate provides an abundant flora, & the sharp mountain peaks & wild rivers offer many outdoor activity opportunities. The southern stretch of the road is a journey through lush nature, with the ocean, sheltered bays & beaches on the seaward side of the road & mountains & peaks on the other. This coast is rich in tradition, legends & stories. The Vega Islands are on UNESCO`s World Heritage List. The Seven Sisters north of Alstahaug & Torghatten south of Brønnøysund are well known natural attractions along this stretch of road. They are a range of seven mountains, all more than 1, 000 metres above sea level. The 160 metre-long hole through the Torghatten Mountain was created in the ice age. In the north the road winds along coast & sea, mountain & glacier & crosses the Arctic Circle towards the midnight sun of summer & the-round-the clock darkness of winter. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Helgeland`s nature is rich & fertile. The sea-lanes along this coast were once the country`s main thoroughfare for north-south travel. The Svartisen Glacier is easily seen from the road, a 350 square kilometre demonstration of frozen power. An arm of the glacier, the Engabreen Glacier, reaches down from 1, 200 metres above sea level & almost to the fjord itself. Beyond the tourist route, more than 14, 000 islands stretch out into the ocean, offering a wealth of activity & experiences. The islands of the Helgeland Coast have been made accessible to travellers by ferries & express boats. Helgoland on a topographic map at 1:200, 000 from the Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie, Germany’s federal mapping agency. The map covers an area of Approx. 100 x 90km. This map is belongs to a series of 58 topographic maps from Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie, the federal cartographic agency of Germany responsible for topographic mapping at 1:200, 000 & maps at smaller scales (the more detailed topographic & leisure maps are prepared & published by the survey organizations of the individual states). Cartography is from the 200K topographic survey & the maps have very elegant, modern look whilst retaining the traditional German presentation of names of smaller towns & villages in italics. Contours are at 12, 5m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, with colouring for woodlands, moors, marches, vineyards & hop plantations. Waterways & rivers are also described in detail, with currents, waterfalls, dams, & jetties clearly marked. Road network, graded into five types, highlights in colour national & regional roads; no driving distances are marked Railway network is also shown in detail, with stations, goods only lines, etc. The maps show administrative boundaries of states & counties, & have a UTM grid plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 2’ intervals. Queen Victoria telegrammed from Balmoral to register her fury. During both world wars, it was used by Germany to control the North Sea, & RAF planes bombed the once-British territory.
